Well I had to miss the meet but I did get the valve adjustment done. A spur of the moment thing, with the nice weather it was the perfect time to do it.

I followed this guide:

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=113415

If you're planning to do this, here's some info that's not in the thread:

- The shim magnet tool is not just useful, it's required. Don't even bother doing this without it.
- This isn't a difficult job if you do your due diligence. Make sure you're labeling or organizing all the parts that you're disconnecting or unscrewing so you can put it all back the right way after. I even labeled the ignition coils and bolts even though it probably doesn't matter. I wanted to be sure though.
- A set of bent feelers is also pretty much required, the straight feelers would be a nightmare on the valves in the back.
- Take breaks, being bent over a car for hours at a time is tedious, unless you're... well you get the joke already.
- Well placed plastic shopping bags will keep you from losing shims. So even if you do drop one, you won't have to look far.
- The spark plugs are DEEP inside the engine! DEEP! I needed to use two extensions in addition to the plug socket to loosen the plugs up so I could turn the cams. So make sure you have a few extensions to do this.
- Don't be dumb like me and leave the car in gear. I kept turning the fan to turn the valves and my car kept moving backwards for some reason.
- When checking the shims record everything. The feeler that goes, the feeler that doesn't, the size of the shim when you remove it, the one you replaced it with, everything.
- This was a lot of fun actually, that valvetrain was a thing of beauty, and I learned a lot about the inner workings of this car. I've never seen an ignition coil before.

well done!

so did you have to replace any shims and how in/out of spec were the clearances when you first checked?

I replaced two. I am going to attach my full report here soon :) Basically I was limited by the gap in the shims (0.04mm) which didn't let me get it as close as I would have liked, lol. Yes, I am anal :)

Whats a good indication that its time to do this, other then KM reading. What are some symptoms?

Also, any idea what this would cost to have done in a shop? Including parts and how many hours labour?

What did it cost you for parts? And where did you get/order them all from?

I got all the parts from Tischer.

Cost of parts incl tax ship, the works, about $550. HOWEVER!! $350 of that is the shim kit, which you need if you replace any shims. If you do, just replace the shims you use and sell the kit to someone else as a new kit. I am selling mine now that I'm done.

As for the rest:

$70 of that is in the feeler kit and the wrench to turn the fan.
$30 is the magnetic shim installer.

Only $90-100 is actual consumables like the gasket, etc.

The dealer charges $800-$900 as does a lot of other places because of the amount of time required. It's 80% labor.

So I saved like $700 as far as I'm concerned :) That's a few track days :)

As far as symptoms, it's part of Inspection I and II for the M3, for the other models I am not sure. An indication of needing this done is knocking of the valves, which you apparently can hear. I've never had the problem so I can't describe it.

How many days at the track do I have to buy you to give me a hand??
;)

I will buy your kit assuming I get the courage to do this thing....

I have 115k on my m3 so it is time, its the only thing left I have to do for the inspection.

Lol I will insert disclaimers :) (Jason is not responsible for etc etc etc) :D

Yeah sure I can give you a hand, if you want to buy the kit let me know. I can help out.

You just need to buy the consumables. I have all the tools and the E46 / M3 service manual.

Damn this is tempting - my Inspection 2 is coming up and I have all the parts for the valve adjust already, except for the shims.

For anyone thinking of doing this, make sure you read that thread I posted, all pages, as it has a lot of good info.

After reading it and doing my research, it really was a breeze.
