Ok, I need to know how many people can commit with deposits to book a track day next spring. Deposits would be $150 asap. There will be a maximum of 25 slots available.
It would be more or less our own day with others as required to fill the slots. I will organize and arrange all the instruction and agenda. It would be a full day from 9am to 5pm.
No extras like pit girls, prizes or 5 star catered lunch, but I will guarantee fun factor like you will never forget.
Beginners, advanced, track virgins or just virgins are welcome.

June 2005 is not the e46tortonto day, if Im reading everythign right. I think he wants to get a e46 date going in Spring. You drive rain or shine. Glen would have to reserve soon to get the desired date, so we would have to get on it right away and give me our cash.

A typical track day (driving school or just "open lapping") is a Go regardless it is sunny or raining; it is not postponed and no refunds. People still go out and drive in the rain, but if you are not comfortable you can sit-out a session and wait until the rain stops.
An exception would be something like 6 inches of ice at Mosport on April 12-13, 2003 which caused BMW Club's April driving school to be cancelled and fees transferred to pay for their June driving school.

Fastlaps will be another day, most likely June 30th again.

No month booked yet. That is why I need to know from you guys/gals which month is preferred. Either May, July or August.
June will be my official Fastlaps day and you will all have a chance to go to that one to space limiting.
This one is just for the E46 TO members.

April 15th to May 6th to be exact.
which track will the meet be at?
glenspeed
11-28-2004, 09:08 AM
The track will be at Shannonville. 1.5hrs from TO.
I like Shannonville because:
1) I know it like the back of my hand
2) You can easily divide the track into two separate tracks for beginners/advanced
3) Very technical track with good mix of high and low speed turns
4) Good track for learning on
5) Lots of run-off and not alot of walls to hit (unlike Mosport)
6) Decent size track that allows you to observe the whole track from any vantage point. (if you don't see the whole track, you will need corner workers stationed)
7) Restaurant/snack bar on site

Yes, everyone is very nice....otherwise your BANNED!
It's a very casual relaxed atmosphere with absolutely no pressure to drive "fast". Everyone, even the professional racers are there to improve and learn something. If we were all the best drivers and had nothing to learn, we would be in F1 and racing against Schumacher!
What I will guarantee you is that by the end of the day, you will be a better driver and be able to negotiate the track faster than when you got there and have a new appreciation for your car and your driving skills.

really the reservation is made so that I can book the track and have it paid for without me trying to find others to make up the $$$ at the last minute or worse me paying for it, since it's all on my credit card. If at the end of the day, there are more people that want to come in, then it would be very easy to sell your spot or even refund your money, but it all depends on how many people I get at the end of the day. Realistically, it's not that difficult to sell your spot if you can't make it...however, for me I would say at this point the spot is non-refundable since the deposit for the track is not either.

If anything you should take the car to the track, it will only improve your driving skills and your knowledge of what the car can do.
To make you feel better, the day is very organized and not a free for all with crazy drivers trying to be the fastest of the day. I don't tolerate pressure driving and only allow for proper, well spaced passing in designated zones. Beginners always go on the track with an instructor, unless they have in the opinion of the instructor good enough to go on their own. Beginners also start off with a off-track instruction session going through all the basics of track driving. We start off slow with instructor lead-follow in instructor cars, then have separate beginner sessions with an instructors in students' cars showing them the lines and proper places to brake, turn and accelerate.
There have been many beginners go through my event and all of them have come back wanting more! Not all are performance cars and certainly not all with M3 performance potential, so really anyone with any ability can come and appreciate track driving.

Hmmm.... Glen, at that, that's something I can't shell out now as an advance. Not with the holidays coming up & all. I may have to withdraw at $200. Sorry Glen. :(
Sorry, what I mean to say is that the total cost will go up to $214. Deposit still $150.
Here are the numbers so everyone can see:
Track rental weekday - $3745 = $150 per person 25 people
Track rental weekend - $5350 = $214 per person 25 people
personally I would prefer a weekend for $50 more that way we don't have to worry about work things coming up or vacation/sick days!

Mosport is twice as much if you can get it. They hold alot of big races there so that's alot of weekends gone. It's also a very big track with no site lines to all corners so way more work and help needed to run a day there. Also it is a difficult track to master and lots of walls to hit if you screw up. It's also a higher speed track so if something does go wrong...it's not a great beginner track let's put it that way. Shannonville has alot of grass versus walls and has lots of technical corners with slow, medium and high speed corners, great track for beginners and advanced alike.

what exact tires are on each? honestly for beginners it won't make a big difference unless you care which tires wear a bit more...
the 17's will probably feel more responsive because of the lower sidewall and maybe offer more grip because of the stiffer sidewall...but we are not racing here, just learning so whatever wheel you want to go with..

seeing some of the posts let me make this comment:
this is not a racing day nor will there be any racing allowed. what this day is for is to have so much fun you can't take it anymore in a controlled, learning environment. It will be very casual and everyone will have more track time then they will be able to use (trust me on this one). It's certainly not about who has the fastest car or the best track car, if most people attending are not track veterans or even first timers, also trust me on this one, I could take you out in a Corolla (no disrepect to Corolla owners, but since that example was used) and you would be soiling your undergarments...
so that being said, everyone is welcome regardless of the performance of their vehicle!

I don't necessarily like to go on the track myself with people that have something to prove.
Pej, if you remember that some of the people that came to Fastlaps last year were actual professional racers, 1 was chief Porsche club instructor, another was a former Porsche racer, etc...it was some of the most controlled driving you will ever see...also you know they could go alot faster, but what for? They are there to have fun as well, not to prove anything...

that's it, I want everyone to feel comfortable about going on the track. I know from alot of experience that most people are nervous enough as it is, if it is their first time (even though there is nothing to be nervous about), so making it a casual, easygoing experience will ensure that after the event, they are hooked! Anyone that has come to my track days the first time, has always wanted to come back.

it would probably be more relevant if there were alot more people from this board out of the total. so far it's 9/25, so not sure that it would be "statistically significant". It think for the most part, a weekend is agreed to be alot easier for people to attend and avoid things coming up at work at the last minute or needing to take a vacation/sick day. I think for the extra $ pp, most people would prefer that.

I would be good for April 30th. Approx. how many hours in track time would we each get? A full day = 9am-5pm?
Man, i remember how excited I was for BMW driver training level 1, and I walked away from that feeling unfulfilled. too much classroom time.
and regarding payment -> are there any e46 social events or meets coming up this month? I could get the deposit to you then.

Great, you are added to the list! Once I get the numbers I need, we can arrange for deposits to be sent to me or next meet whichever comes first.
Full day = 9am to 5pm.
You will not be able to use the whole 8 hours....trust me! It's so intense, most people stop by 3pm.

If the track day occurs after April 29th, I am prettty flexible, weekends or weekdays. The 29th is my last day of exams.
Hey quick question: would it be a good idea to know how to heel/toe before coming to this thing? I haven't learnt that technique yet :Idunno:
the only experience i have is, well, i am an avid GranTurismo3 addict who has done immense training on laguna seca :blaaaa:

Wrentech,
So far the date is April 30th. I would worry about just getting the feel of it first and the basics, then worry about the heel and toe. I was a newby last time too, and trust me, getting comfortable on the track, getting the lines, your braking points down are more important. Glen will be able to better explain, as he has lots of experience.

As Pej said, the first thing to do is familiarize yourself with the track and the using the proper lines, braking and acceleration points. Yes, good techniques like heel and toe are useful to make the transitions smoother and faster, but if you don't know how to do it in your sleep, don't worry about it for the track day. We will only concentrate on driving the car and improving your own driving skills, not teaching you how to race...
I've played GT as well and it's not even close to the real thing! It might be good for learning the track layout, but when you are moving in a car and things are coming up fast, you won't remember Gran Turismo...
glenspeed
12-08-2004, 06:44 PM
another thing, for the most part you will have so many other things to concentrate on you won't be thinking about heel & toe...where to start turning, how much to turn, when to start braking, when to stop braking, where to start accelerating, when to stop accelerating all that on top of balancing the car and keeping it smooth through the transitions. Where is the apex, how to cut the apex, how to set up for the next corner, how to set up for the next straight...

If it is on April 30th, I'm 90% sure that is our pre season practice day so it wouldn't be possible (I have to be there all day). Plus on a regular Saturday, I need to be at the track in Stroud by 4 at the latest.
Sorry Glen - weekday would work better for me.

Yeah, this sounds like fun. I'll keep an eye out just in case the date changes.
The track probably will be a little slick in April - our guys are usually changing pressures in the early part of the season to keep up.
As for getting sick, riding shotgun in a Late Model is pretty close to nausea until your body gets used to it! (Ask me how I know.) Slicks stick real good!

I've been getting a few comments about April weather conditions and was wondering (bad for you Pej, and I would be disappointed) if it would be better to move the day to last Saturday in May (28th)? Since most of the E46 crew are not track veterans, a nice warm sunny day (at least more chances of it) might be more appreciated????

as promised, I won't cash them until I have the date booked, so if I don't get all the commitments/deposits in to book, all cheques will be returned.
if I get the 25 people it will be $214 total. so once I booked the track I will ask for the remaining balance.

If you do it May 28th I'm in, April is not a good month for the track due to the possibility of slick conditions, and with car insurance being null and void on a track it is better to be safe than sorry.

well to be clear, it wouldn't necessarily be "safer" if it was dry because you can then drive faster...
I'm all for nice sunny weather though. It's more fun to hang as well.
