Just curious fellas and ladies...
How many of you store (or plan to store) your babies in the winter? Drive year round? Choice of shoes? With such a diverse group of cars I'm curious...

If i don't end up getting a beater which wouldn't be the ideal plan, mine's truding through another winter. :(

During the winter, I only drive my car when it's nice outside and I use my stock rims/tires.

I drove my car through last winter but am planning to get a beater this year. It's pretty rough on the car to go through Toronto salt/sand regimes. The city seems to forgo plowing the roads in favour of salt/sand dumps. :thumbsdow

Up here it is stone chips and sheer snow volume - dropping your ride is suicide...
Year round driver for me too - set of 16" steels w/ OEM caps, Toyo snows (not the best IMO).

We store the car in the winter. :)
I'm not rich enuff to get another car so I'm driving mine all year round. Well I got some new winter tires recently from you know who :p
If those tires (pirelli snowsport 210) don't do good on snow I'm going to switch to maybe the dunlop M3 tires :blaaaa:
Man I hope this winter is not going to hurt my baby :0

The predicted winter is a gonna be bad & long. But I never believe the weather people. Just like car salespeople.

I put Blizzak LM-22 one my sport package rims and they drive like a tractor through the snow.
They looked odd though because the rims are different width and I had the same size tire all around (225/45R17).
I was originally going to get new summer rims (which is why I used my sport rims for winter), but other expenses came up. I will probably get a used set of OEM 17 to mount those tires on this year and get my M68's refinished. Salt and sand is brutal on the rim finish (plus the last installer back in the spring didn't do a good job with the summer rubber).
Winter's are harsh, but you if you protect it with Zaino and clay bar the sucker in early spring, it will be good as new. Bimmer handles the snow pretty well with good shoes!

Where are you planning to get your rims refinished? I may do that too.

As soon as I pick up some OEM rims for winter tires...to swap in the interim.
It takes 24 hours at Carcone's to refinish...4 rims is $400.

I've got the XI so I'm definatley going to drive it all winter. I'll be putting my stock 17's back on for the snow. :( It would be ideal to get a Jeep or something but I spent all my $$$ on mods!!

and no stone chip in the front.
I cruz the 401 from Toronto to Montreal so often that I would not want to drive anything less than a BMW or MB. I paid for safety, then handling and grip with the fuel economy of the 2.5liter
I never wax my car, is that bad?

I only saw this post now...
You never wax your car? Dude, no offense.. but no wonder everytime you showed up to a meet your car looked like it had truckload of soot dumped on it. Sorry...But everybody knows how anal I am with clean cars.
Your car may not have stone chips cause you can't see them underneath that film of dirt & grime.
WAX YOUR CAR. I can't stress it enough. If we want to get nit picky, you can save more gas even by a teensy weensy bit cause :
1) your car carries less weight with all that dirt & grime attached to it.
2) your car has a smoother surface, thus making it more aerodynamic, especially driving to Montreal back & forth.
I don't endorse/promote Zaino... yet, but if you're lazy to wax, use Zaino. Lasts longer than Pinnacle but has less depth. (Don't worry guys, I'll offer Zaino next year along with Pinnacle.)
I'm off topic now... but damn... Naughty Oyster. Spend less time perfecting Tikka chicken, and work on your car bro. Cheers. :)

If I was to put my car outside w/a carcover. Will this damage anything as oppose to keeping it in a garage? I've seen a lot of ppl do this. Dunno if this will do damage.

Are you talking normally or over winter time? Not all car covers are created equal. Make sure you get a breathable one to let mositure out and one that that wont scratch your car by pushing trapped dirt around. Some even come with cable locks for extra security.

During winter. I have an outdoor carcover (breathable). No locks though. It's just a thought, coz i'd like to park the actual car i'm using in the garage so it will be warm & toasty in the morning.

Choppers points are valid.
Also make sure to drive it around the block every week or so when it is safe to do so. Keeps the fluids from settling too much and the tires from getting a flat spot.
Also check with your insurance co. Some will give you a credit for the months you don't use the car but legaly you can't drive it around. Tell the insurance co. that you WILL be storing the car inside the locked and covered garage.

One of the biggest problems with outdoor storage is what you park the vehicle on. We had a Triumph Spitfire that had been parked outside for a few years on grass/dirt - all the moisture perked up through the ground and rotted out the undercarriage. (Of course this is the extreme.)
Protecting the underside by storing on a paved surface is as important as the car cover IMO.

Keep the precious baby inside garage and get a remote car starter for your winter beater? Oh wait a minute, mayber it's not a beater.... a brand new X5, perhaps? :yourmyido Then it's a toss up. :Idunno:
I drive mine in winter...put some decent snows on with stock rims.. and WASH it regularly to keep the salt off (3 times a week)... never had a prob..

90Gs, but they are dropping the price cuz of the X3 -- mind you, after Top Gears ravaging by Clarkson of the X3, no one will want it -- Clarkson hates everything BMW

Did you see that last week Anth? Going knee deep in the mud, and the doors wouldn't open?? That was classic!
