Hey Everyone,
Really love what you are doing here. Sorry I haven't been able to make it out to a meet and greet yet but I plan on being at one soon. I'm a new member from Toronto, born and bred. I was living in Los Angeles where I got my 02 E46 M3, 6spd, Black on Cinnamon. I'll post pictures when I can figure out how to decrease the size of them (not a tech junkie so if anyone knows an easy way let me know).
I have a question though. I am taking a road trip to Chicago in a week and still have my radar detector from when I was in LA. Does anyone know what the penalty is for being caught with one in Ontario? Also, do the cops here have detector detectors? or will they just have to see it in my windshield?
Thanks everyone, really excited to be a new member here.
Regards
Josh

Welcome aboard. Black on Cinnamon is drool .
If you want to post pic, upload them to photobucket. When you set your parameters for upload, you can resize as they are uploaded. I find that 400 (H)x600 (w) works nicely on this site.
Cheers.

Welcome! Yes, post pics ASAP and follow doc's advice. re: detector, I don't have personal experience but if you do a quick search you'll find a few threads on the matter. cuz you're a n00b I thought I'd help you:

I recall that there's a $500 fine and they do have detector detectors because in some cases I recall they asked the driver if he had one, when it was concealed. No points are deducted though, so if you have deep pockets I guess that's okay lol (if you have the need for speed). Not sure if they confiscate.

they have RDDs, and they will confiscate. the only RD that you can use in ontario in the Bel Sti Driver...completely undetectable.
but then again, they also have laser guns, so you have to consider a laser jammer setup too.

Yes it is $500, they confiscate it. No points for having an illegal device but you will get points for speeding.

Bel STi Driver is the ONLY one that is undetectable by Ontario police. Everything else will be detected and you'll be busted.
I've got an STI driver and it works as advertised. I was coming back from a trip to Montreal yesterday...driving right behind OPP with my detector beeping like mad. And didn't get pulled over or anything.

There are actually 2 that are undetectable to the police's Spectre R.D.D (Radar Detector-Detector) units.
The Beltronics STi as mentioned above,
and the Passport 9500ci
Also as mentioned, neither of these units will help you with laser... I had a wireless beltronics unit back in 2004 which was VG-2(the older R.D.D's) invisible... Thought I was so cool. little did I know they came out with the Spectre 1 R.D.D (they are up to Spectre 4 now) a month after I got it,was pulled over, and it was confiscated.. you live and you learn. The fine was $320, no points - but just wait until your insurance finds out about that one
Luckily my lawyer it thrown out ... :yourmyido
I just got nasty ticket last weekend at bayview going southbound at lawrence... Got nabbed with laser im pretty sure. I know i know, supposedly they are always there but it was my 1st time in the area.
Id say that you are OK with using your current (detectable) RD for brief periods of time during your trip, but only IF you are surrounded by a few other cars. Just make sure you shut it down as SOON as she goes off

Are they able to detect the red light cameras? I am not sure how these cameras work-do they emit a constant wave or only after the light turns red or yellow? Any idea?

The 9500 has GPS technology. That feature allows you to upload known red light camera and speed trap coordinates to it, causing it to beep when approaching. one of the many features it has over the Sti - somewhat justifying its increased cost.
You can also get these red light and speed trap map POI's for your current mobile GPS units:

I want to get the STi Driver for myself. I currently have the Beltronics RX65 which saved my ass in the US many times. 1yr later, STi driver came out. As for ON, i've never taken the chance b/c I know it's detectable and since I drive in the US a lot, very useful as I have been busted before in NJ with a hefty fine and that's when I decided to bite the bullet and made the purchase. RX65 was top of the line prior to the release of STi Driver.
