Always had to itch to get into this... how do I get started?

Auto-x? Instruction? Helmet? Preventative maintenance?

There was a great thread on this topic about a year ago.
Try the search function, it should be there.

Helmet is a must...

Jsonli, what do you plan to do? Auto-X or circuit tracking? If you want to do the later, sign up to the BMW trillium event this weekend.

I found that one, but he had some prior experience.

As for auto-x vs circuit, I don't really know. :D
If I have to downshift into 1st in auto-x, I don't think my tranny would like that.

Auto X is a lot of fun and a great way to start. You will learn about car control at a low speed and in a safe environment.

I would try the BMW CCC events and see how you like it. Here is the link for the 2009 season. (http://www.trillium-bmwclub.ca/site/page.jsp?Autocross)

The BMW CCC also runs very good events on the track that include in class instruction and instructors in your car at all times when you are on the track.

I read they have an event happening on June 14.
Can you register on the spot?
Are any of you guys going to there?

Are any of you guys going to there?Yes you can. But you have to join the BMW car club of Canada which cost $57 per year. (this can be done on the spot) You also pay $15 per autoX event.

If you check the page in the link above they have 3 forms you need to fill out for your first event. A "quick membership" form, a "car info" form and an "event registration" form. Pre-print all 3 before you go.

I plan to attend. Just show up with your car in good condition. If you ask around, people
will give you a hand with tire pressure and wheel torque. Forms can be filled out on the
spot. Just show up a 15-20min earlier, so you'll have time to fill them. Or you can
download pdf's from following page, print and fill them at home.

Hmm that looks interesting. I'll look into it - thanks.

who's ur daddy?

If you go lapping day @ the track, make sure you go with someone to show you the lines and teach you some basics like the apexes. The first time I went, I was scared and frustrated because the car was so unbalanced. Stressed because people were riding my ass, etc. Then someone showed me the lines, braking points, etc., and the car was so much more balanced. Had just so much fun after that.

Helmet is always a good idea. Hopefully you'll never have to use it...

It is a very good idea go to an event with instructors, like the BMW Car Club of Canada events, for your first two or three track days at minimum.

Instructors will teach you the fundamentals which will greatly reduce the likelihood of you having an incident. Stuff like the proper line, how/when to brake, even the proper driving position. Most importantly they teach what NOT to do.

Once you know the fundamentals you will be a lot faster and safer.

Yup, was definitely looking for in-car instruction. I probably have a lot of bad habits from regular driving that are no good on the track.

BTW, my non-M steering wheel is thin, big and slippery; any recommendations for driving gloves?

Webbie uses gloves. Check with him. Are you thinking of race / nomex or leather?

I use Sparco Fast Tech gloves which is what most F1 and IRL drivers used before the big switch over to Alpinestars. They are very comfortable because all seams are inside out making the inside seams of the glove smooth and pressure point free. About $100.

I have not tried any of the new Alpinestars gloves but they are very popular. The Karting gloves start at around $40.

If you are on a budget a lot of guys use MechanixWear FastFit gloves.
