Resetting Oil/Service Light on 99-00 E46

If you have a post 9/1999 build model, you can try the following method:
1.The ignition key must be in OFF postion.
2.Press and hold trip odometer button on instrument cluster, and turn ignition key to ON position.
3.Keep button pressed for approximately 5 more seconds until any of the following appear in the display: "Oil Service" or "Inspection", with "Reset" or "Re".
4.Press button again and hold for approx. 5 seconds until "Reset" or "Re" flash.
5.While display is flashing, press button briefly to reset Service Indicator.
6.After display has shown new interval, the following will appear in display for approx. 2 seconds: "End SIA".
Only do this if you're no longer covered by scheduled maintenance. If you do an oil change at 12,000km on your own dime, the next one at 20-25000 will be done by BMW. If you reset your counter, they will not do it.

I thought you had to link the Pins 7 and 9 with a paperclip to reset the counter. I'd rather try this method first I guess.

I have a buddy at the track who has undoubtedly confirmed that after switching to Royal Purple in his hauler (a 2004 Ford F350), he is getting better fuel mileage and the motor is running quieter and cooler. And this guy knows his motors - he builds all his own and has won championships with them.
Also read about hydrocracked synthetics - not all synthetics are the same (Mobil 1 included). I have a local hookup for Royal Purple at around 6 and change a litre, and that is what I'm going with next time.

Oyster: your explanation for resetting Oil Service for E46 99-00 will seem to be helpful when I do mine, however, you didn't explain what to do with the mushroom port and pin7. In my '00, resetting is done through the mushroom port and not the ODBII port. So am I supposed to get an paperclip or some wire like what Chopper was asking?

Yup...tried the other method and it didnt work for my 2000. I'm gonna try the grounding with the paperclip later today probably to see if it works.

Why not buy a reset tool? Certain things you can be cheap on (I do it all the time) but c'mon, don't play Russian Roulette with your ECU.

Mobil1 5W-30 is not suitable because it doesn't have BMW LL rating? If that's the case and one were to change oil, say every 5000 km, does it really matter? :Idunno:
In other words, the BMW LL rating is a factor only if oil drain intervals are obscenely high as recommended by BMW?

It seems silly to buy a $300 part for just resetting a indicator on your dash when the oil has already been changed, etc.
However, I tried the grounding method last night and it did not reset. I'm gonna try it again, but has anyone here tried to reset an 99-00 car and succeded??

Success!!
I jumped the pins again last night and reset the oil service light no problem. woot woot
All you need is a paperclip. Easy as pie.
I also reset my inspection interval to 25000kms as well just to see if it would work. :D :D

isn't the oil and inspection the same thing? :Idunno: I guess I also resetted my inspection interval
no...oil service and engine service lights are different codes. You just short the same pins however for a longer period of time to reset the engine service counter.
