I've tried a few rim cleaners and I find that good old soap/water and a wash mitt is the only way to go.
I heard Wheel Wax helps make cleanup easier but I have yet to try that.
When it's time to change pads, try Axxis(PBR) Deluxe PLUS. That's what I have now and I no longer have black dust and my rims stay clean a heck of lot longer.

Yeah, I am almost hoping my pads wear out soon so I can switch to the Axxis pads and get rid of that darn brake dust. :)

I don't know, I've tried some of those wheel cleaner spray and it gets the brake dust out pretty good. It does make it cleaner but don't know how good it is to your wheels. If I'm too lazy to scrub my wheels I use those spray :p

I got my methodology down pat...I use Simoniz rim cleaner spray w/ break dust repellant...there are two types...so make sure you get the one w/ the repellant cause it will prevent break dust from forming again. I then hose it down and then clean them with a soft cloth to get at all the creases. i don't know what type of rims you have...but mine are a pain to clean.

but you still gotta wipe it down with a towel after you spray right? it's not good to just spray, hose and that's all...i think that's what you said.

I second Reg's choice. Eagle One a to Z cleaner.
Because of my pain in the arse cross spoke rims and crappy brake pad spewing brake dust, I do my rims once a week.
Spray with cleaner, let it sit for no longer than a minute. Hose it down with preseeure washer and 90% of the dust is gone in less than a minute. After that is just a mitt with some good ol car wash soap and water. And another hose down.
Wheel cleaning Tip of the week: Because there is water sitting in areas of the rim that you can't clean or reach, After I finish washing/drying the car, I like to take my car out for a spin around the block, reeeeaaaallll slow so the water comes out. Don't go fast or it'll just back splash on to your rocker panels. This also gets rid of any water left in the recessed areas.
Do not wash your wheels after driving. The pads/rotors have to cool down first.
Then again, I can tell 14 spots on every e46 bimmer where water is recessed after a washing... :wink2:

Then again, all the lazys with cross spoke rims, ZHP's, mutli spokes that are too lazy to detail your rims, call me.
Keeping your rims in good condition and preventing brake dust from burning in increases your chances of selling your rims if ever.

Thanks for everybody's advice. Sounds like nothing beats soap and scrubbing. I was using this spray (bought from Can Tire) to clean the tires. Problem is all the dirt and crap dripped onto the rims, and now I have to clean the wheels!!
I'll try the 'traditional' method this weekend, but if all else fails, Chris......

Hey Chris, any tips on how to keep the polished lip clean? Does wheel wax helps? It was so shiny when you drop off the car to me today, but after a trip to downtown tonite, they just look so dirty :(

Just wipe them down with a clean rag EVERY night. Takes less than 2 min. Your middle part is grey anyway so the wheels will still look amazing

I swear that's what he does everynight! I don't recall every seeing our car dirty. Don't forget to clean your exhaust tips too. Once the dirt get hard, it more difficult to remove them. :)

I think that purples power is multipurpose cleaner. Awesome stuff. You can essentially clean a whole car with that stuff alone. Great stuff, but usually only available through industrial detailing distributors and $$$. And you go through it pretty quick cause you tend to use it for everything.

Follow Erics suggestion. Do a wipe down. I suggest, hosing it down first to get any grit off then wipe down. This way when you wipe down to polish, you don't put hariline scratches in your chrome lip.
Also may be your brake pads. You will also notice more accumulation of crap on your rims as Eric will on his cause there's a lip to collect all of that.
