I would like to hear from people who actually calculate their fuel mileage and not what your onboard is displaying.
I calculate mine every tank just to keep an eye on how the car is running and I find myself amazed at what I am finding.
Car is a 2000 328Ci with a 5spd.
City driving averages at 28.5 mpg
Highway driving averages at 33 mpg

00 328i
used to be 8-9L/100km hwy & 11/100km City
buy now 11/100km hwy & 15/100km City, dunno what's wrong! already have new O2 sensor, new air filter, just have oil changed, new spark plug for 1 yr ago, good tire pressure. NE1 have ne idea?

Those are pretty good numbers... I'm only averaging 20-22 mpg.

i've always been wondering about this calculation. I'm horrible with numbers and math so forth.
How do i calculate fuel economy.
I have a '00 323i sedan.
I know I get just over 500kms (about 512) on a full tank with reserved conservative granny driving. Does having different octane gas like 94 for example become a factor in fuel economy/usage.?

reset odometer each fill up
total trip odomoter = say 500km
you pump in 55 litres
so it's it's 100 km x 55 litres / 500 km = your mileage

Great thanks Tuan. I'll have to try that next fillup.
We'll sticky this one for future reference.

Here's what I do.
Every time I fill up I fill the tank until the pump clicks off. I don't add any more gas, partially b/c it will spill right away on my car. I also reset my odometer. So the next time I fill up I know how many kilometers I've driven.
Then I take my mileage, and the amount that I filled up (only until the pump clicks off) and calculate my mileage.
For info here are the conversions for you guys.
km/L means nothing to me???
km/1.6 = miles
L/4.54 = gal
Example last weekend I drove to Calgary
430km/1.6 = 268.75 miles
35.88L/4.54 = 7.9 gal
268.75/7.9 = 34.01899 mpg

My gas milage isnt so hot, but i tend to drive the car hard :) (its meant for it!)
City is ~ 14 L/100K
Highway is ~ 9.5 L/100K

I am guilty as you are... However, I seem to be getting much better mileage after Sharking. Need more data to prove it though... it's only been a few days.

I noticed your L/Gal conversion, it's actualy 3.8 L/US Gal, 4.54L/Imperial Galon which nobody uses anymore.
