OK guys what would you choose.

1. inexpensive but heavy 19" wheels that look good
2. moderately priced 19" wheels that are ultra light but look great to some but blah to others....
3. expensive 19" wheels that are light compaired to OEM.
4. ULTRA expensive 20" wheels that cost as much as a small car....

The wheels must look good (but most of the 19s look good :yak: ), not too heavy and not too expensive...
Do you have any sample wheel in mind for each category ? Personally I like BBS LMs on M3 or HRE ...

No 20" ... :thumbsdow

What about 18inch wheels when 17 would suffice option?? :) Im beginning to wonder if the additional costs for 18's is even worth it for me! (ie rims/17's for winter, risk of bending rim, additional weight, etc).

18'' is the optimal rim size for E46 platform performance wise. I'd say stick with them :) You can also find winter tires in 18'' size, probably.

I wouldn't go with any rim that is heavier than stock. You can really feel heavy rims, both in terms of acceleration and handling. If staying stock is not an option ( no peer pressure from this forum, no sir :) ), 19's that are lighter in the design that YOU like sound about right :D

Can you point me anywhere for that? I havent looked seriously, but thus far ive only seen <= 17.

One euro bimmer mag did a test on a 330Ci a while ago, with different rims, tires, etc. They found 18s offered the best handling while still retaining the ride composure on rough road, etc. I'll try to dig it up if I still have it.

option 2 or 3 gets my vote~
get some u like, look good and lighter than OEM 19"...
no 20" please... they are overkill...

I'd choose 2, cause who cares what looks blah to others. How does it make you feel? Happy for chinsed out? Do what you wanna do. Everydboy has their own personal preference in stylin... you can choose the pimpest 19's but doesnt mean everyone will like/appreicate it.

Just my 2 pesos and 5 pennies.

If I were you I get expensive rims because you have a expensive car. If you put a dirty shoes on with a nice suit it doesn't look right. :)

I agree with Gary. Expensive suit deserves expensive shoes :)

Get whatever 19"s suit you. I like the stock 19s. I think if you get 20s, you are making a statement. The wrong one!

Have fun shopping....

You are making me spend too much money!!! You know the only 20's that I like HRE 841R'sssssss

Since this will be the only major mod on the car I might spend a little more $$$ :crying:

Now your talking! What do u think? You can't just move into the realm of the M series & expect to pay $$$ like your modding a 3series. Spend a bit more it's only money (& most improtantly not mine). Seriously..put the best thing that u can afford on it. It will be money well spent. Your not a stranger in the modding scene, U know what I'm talking bout.

Spinners! Imagine going to a meet in the parking lot, you brake hard and your wheel keeps spinning! str8pimp

Make sure they are chrome!

I know this was not your option and I am definetely in minority here, but my 2 cents would be a nice 18" rims (strong, light, good name ... BBS, HRE, Filkse etc) ...... if you are using the car as a daily drive.

here are some of the reasons for not going higher than 18" on a daily drive:

- 18 & 19 inch rims "looks" the same size (see Page3 link below)
- higher risk of damage from a pothole [this would be the biggest reason for me]
- higher risk of damage from curbs, parking lot dividers etc because of lower tire sidewall
- higher risk of being stolen
- ride comfort of a daily drive
- to get light 19" rims and tires will not be expensive but very expensive..... don't forget your M3 insurance will go up $$$
- I am attaching liks to a Road & Track article - "How low can you go" from February 1999 to show how different sizes compare. In cornering (g-force) and wet braking, 17" & 18" are showing better results. 19" wins in dry slalom by only 1 mph.

are those 20"?? looks like 19" to me...
honestly... 19" are more than enough... enough troble...
with 20" u will probably have to drive granny style to not damage the rim... :blaaaa:

M333ee
09-30-2004, 09:00 AM
I already drive granny style pothole dodging and no curbs or speedbumps

Good points Alex but I've lived with 19's on a 330 with min. sidewall. On a M3 the sidewall will be much higher which is a good thing.

Insurance....what insurance....? :Idunno:

19' are good enough. Lower your car and i'll look nice. 20' will loose some performance. Even the new M5 are only using 19's.

Eric...Judging from your 330 or used to be 330, You know damn well how to dress up your vehicle, so like chris and roni had said get what YOU want to get. You got good taste in mods so just go for what you want on the M3.
To quote gary and jos good suits DESERVES good shoes. PIMP IT OUT..

Get Teddy Bears on 20s I know the queen will like it. You'll be the talk of all the meets that u go to for years & years. You will be 1 of a kind. If u dont like it, we'll find a buyer.
Garry didn't do it. Maybe u can. No guts no Glory. :D

definitely get a set of forged multipiece wheels. Anything less than 19" and you might as well be driving your 330 again.

I'm starting to think it cost too much. Beside the SC, I have to changed the clutch and probably larger brake system. My diff might worn out faster. Shock should be more stiff, that means I have to buy shocks from Eric.

I would say go with 19 because if you go 20 the tires worth almost the same as the set of wheel and you have to drive it so carefully

PS2s! SO3s are heaaavvvvyyyy and stiff, PS2s have amazing grip, turn in and yet are pretty soft over bumps. They have pretty much the same dry traction rating, but PS2 blows away the rest in wet traction.

I'd only get SO3s for their looks... cause they do look nice and aggressive :p
