They seem to be pretty good in the rain. I've been driving on them for a week and it's been raining a lot recently. No probs in the rain even when they are cold.
I was surprised how well my R's got up to temp when I was heat cycling them in a parking lot Thursday night. It was only 2 degrees out and within 3 or 4 laps of the lot there was an amazing difference in grip as the tires got up to temp. I went from sliding like in the wet to so much grip that my neck was getting sore.

Not good news for Cabrio, that makes 3 for 3.
Yorgi
10-23-2005, 09:31 PM
Wet track days are better than dry days in many ways.
Since traction is so much lower in the corners you can practice driving at the limit with a much lower speed; so if you do get it wrong you will leave the track at a much lower speed (or maybe not at all) which is a very good thing. It really teaches you to be smooth too. Plus it's a lot easier on your tires, brakes and other suspension parts.
The big drawback, especially like now when it's cold, is the crappy time you have once you are in the pits. Cold + wet sucks when you are standing around.

It really sucks standing around in the cold when it's wet. Dampness goes right though most coats so make sure you bring lots of layers and very warm shoes.

Hello Everyone,
I was at Shannonville yesterday with you guys in the Blue MINI. Just wanted to drop a line and say thanks for the invite. It was a great time and we really l***** out with the weather. Car was running great overall, being there all day I had a pretty good opportunity to try out some new lines. I didn't get a chance to run the Long track that much as I got there a little late but the Pro was good as I haven't run this layout in a long time. Also thanks to Frank for timing my laps during my last session. It was pretty cool having someone call out the lap times from the passenger seat. The last session was pretty slick with the drizzle but my best time ended up being a 1:24.1. Times were getting better lap after lap but then it was getting really greasy so I came in. I've never had my laps timed before but at least now I have a bit of a barometer. Anyone want to share any times for the Pro track? I'm just curious as to how the MINI compares. Thanks again, looking forward to lapping with you all next year.

Great having you out Amit and the Mini looked amazing going through turn 1 after the front straight. I brought my in-car lap timer and I would have lent it to you to use if I had remembered. The only problem is the sending unit has to sit outside at the pit wall, so in drizzly weather, I'm not sure it would be so good getting wet!
Can't compare against the M3, but my times for Pro track are in the 1.19.5's.

I just got my new exhaust put on a month ago and it does make the car scream, the combo with the supercharger whine is intense at WOT. Glen, 1:19 is in the dry right? I'm wondering what the MINI will do in the dry? Usually how many secs difference do u find between your wet and dry times? Can you give me a link to the timing device you use? I go to Shannonville so often now that timing would make things more interesting. What mods have u done to your M, I didn't get a chance to check out your car. Also if you are ever in MTL, drop me a line if you are free, we could meet up for a drink. I live on the corner of StLaurent on Sherbrooke.

well yesterday was dry! I didn't time yesterday, but I don't think my times would be far off that from the summer. I don't know my wet times...

well yesterday was dry!
True yesterday was dry, the last session I ran though was a bit slick with the drizzle so it was difficult at times to guage the grip. This was my first experience driving in semi-wet. I've driven in full wet and all out downpours, yesterday was a bit tricky cause it was kind-of that in-between stage. The track conditions were a bit deceptive making me a bit over confident at times because the track looked ok. I had to recalculate my brain and slow things down. I think conditions like this is where you are more likely to run into trouble. You are still driving your "dry" line but with different variables.
Can't wait to see the pics!

Im really looking forward to getting it out there. Im trying to see where I can cut some weight too, but I can't find any CSL seats, I dont want to go Recaros, and the CF roof is not an option cause I will not do with out my moonroof. Oh well. Peter's SLK will perform better in the turns with better tires. It's still running stock tires run now.
Awesome event. The rain man just needs to slow up a bit in the pits :D
Go marathon lappers!! The only reason I came off in 45 mins is because I ran out of fuel, trying to run a light load (25L max). Good fun, hope to see all you guys next season, and hopefully I'll have some manly tires on by then.

Rick,
How were the Yokos??
They were great. Like Glen said I think they will last forever. Very little wear after one day.
I think the A032R probably has just a little less grip than the Dunlop SSRs. The Yokos were 245/45 vs the 225/45 Dunlops so overall the A032Rs stuck a little better once they were hot but it took at least 2 laps before they got up to temp. They are a very good beginner tire since they last so long and are just a little less sticky then something like the Toyo RA1 or the Dunlop.
The Toyo RA1 is still my fav tire for the track by far. Very sticky, lasts forever and can take a lot of heat cycles before getting hard. They cost about 1.5x the A032Rs though.

I lost count of how many heat cycles I had on my AO32R's, but even at the end when they were completely slicks they were still better than street rubber. The Dunlop SSR's so far have seen 4 dry events and 1 wet. They should be good for another 2 dry.

We should look into getting a track date at the new track near Ottawa too. Preferably when Im in town.
Just found this. Good news.
On Oct. 17th, the following Notice of Decision, was issued, which reads as follows:
"The Official Plan Amendment is to permit the development of a motorsport track." According to the Decision, "any appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board must be filed with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing no later than 20 days from the date of this notice...."
Thus, the last date for Appeal is Nov. 8, 2005.
The Decision continues: "For the purposes of this subsection a motor sport park shall mean a paved track, not wider that 12 metres and used for the purpose of accommodating recreational, and educational motor sports including driving schools, car clubs, corporate motoring activities, promotions and vehicle demonstrations and does not include major spectator events and professional motor racing, drag racing or demolition events."
For firther information, please contact the undersigned.

Thanks for the welcome, it's always great to meet new track-rats. Just curious as to you guys running R Compounds, who many events are you getting out of them?My Dunlops lasted 1 wet and 3 dry days this year. These were all private track rentals so there was a lot of track time on each day. I ruined my left front at the Mosport Driver Development Track (it has a few very slow right-hand corners) back before I installed my stiffer swaybars, otherwise they would have lasted another day or two for sure. The other 3 tires had about 30% tread left.
My RA1s would typically last 1.5 seasons back when I used them. Usually 6 or 7 events per year. They were on a 944S2 and the events were 2 day Porsche Club or 3 day BMW Club driving schools plus one private track rental.
You can use RA1s until they cord. They are amazing in the dry once they wear down to slicks.

hmm, might be in the future, depending on price. Where is the cheapest place to get them? I heard really good things about Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. The new Yokos are the same price as the Michelins.

Dudes,
What a great track day. Thanks to all who arranged the meet, and thanks to the camera man for the solid pics. I'm sorry I haven't mentioned any names here but I'm just starting to figure out who's who on this forum lol.
Now that I've seen my car LEAN like a SOB, I'm fully aware that I need a full suspension kit, and a seat to keep my butt from flying out the window (Pej can vouch for that lol). Still, the Goblin's doing pretty well for a fully stock civic. If ya'll can believe it, I bought it two years ago at 100K, put 80K more including 3 track days, and all I've done is oil changes and tires. Like a rock baby.
Amit,
Nice meeting you and thanks again for a SICK ride in the mini. That thing is amazing. Gives new meaning to the term "pocket rocket".
Axxe,
How the **** did you get that old car to go THAT fast? I still can't believe it.
Pej,
Missed you buddy. Wasn't the same without the most menacing M3 to ever hit the track, along with the "I ain't scare of you MoFos" driver.
Warren,
Highest score for endurance goes to you. What was it, like 50 hot laps at the end there? And you said you were tired at lunch... psshhh!
Good times boyz!
