Just got off the phone with Paul at Carbonio intakes.
Local business that will get big soon with the aftermarket intake business.
Anybody here have their intake? I only remember seeing the one on the PY M3 at woodbridge.
Chris, Anthony another potential board sponsor and great guy to talk to.
He will also be showing at Bimmercruise.

What does it look like when installed?
Similar style to Dinan and Benfer.. long CF pipe going down to about the bumper by the foglight and brake duct.

Would that be a problem if it comes down into the bumper? My question is wrt to moisture getting in. I always that CAI, like the Gruppe M, is safer.

There is a waterproof sock that protect the filter from getting wet (DINAN sells them for sure) but unless you're going on a puddle 6-12" inches deep, it's probably not a big issue.
For myself, I chose the shielded, short pipe design used by Conforti, ECIS, and Racing Dynamics because of a maintenance concern. I like to have easy access to the filter so I can have a close look everytime I open the hood and clean it if necessary.

To clarify the issue.
Sorry for the miss quoted post but Carbonio does not do group buys and suggests to buy their intakes either online or through their dealer network. :1nono:

On average, I end up cleaning the filter every 5K kms. I'm pretty sure I'm overdoing it but it makes me feel comfortable. I check the filter every week to make sure it's good especially with all the construction happening in my area.

5K is probably overkill... I'd say at least every 10-12K..I do my K&N twice a summer... never hurts to keep your air filter clean..

Do ask Paul if he's got the additional ring for the filter? I had to use the OEM ring to let all the parts go together. It's been a while, Carbonio should provide that ring by now. I think M3s have this issue.
I clean my filter every 10K as they recommended on the instruction.
The cabornio like GruppeM doesn't have a perfect fitment. During installation for M3s, need to makes ure that the lower portion lines up with the air tunnel beside fog light before you tight everything up. Besides that, it will just take about half an hour for installation. Removing your stock might take about 1 hour.
M333ee

It took me about 10min for a ECIS into a 330ci :Idunno:

I'm not sure if Benfer gets their M3 intakes from Carbono :Idunno: but I've heard a few online stores do.
I'm liking the M3motorworks AFE intake right now. $700usd shipped though :crying: :crying:

Yup,
I can't imaging buying a intake that give you maybe 7hp for $1300US :crying: Even the AFE intake which has a dyno increase of at least 12-15hp goes for $700 which is about $1000 Canadian  .
I remember the Honda days when a full cold air AEM intake with piping cost less than $400cdn. Dammmm headers were only $450 .....
The only reason I like intakes is because of the washable filter. The bonus is a LITTLE extra HP and the sound.

How about just a drop-in K&N or ITG filter then? Debaffle the airbox and you get the washable filter and the added sound :Idunno: A little extra hp (7 or so) ain't gonna make any difference on the M3.

I thought the MAF sensor will sense more air and then the software will adjust to it. I really don't think disconnecting the battery is necessary.

I used to think that too but I just tried it out for fun since it was a free mod. The computer does lean you driving patterns and adjusts to how agressive you drive. I was lead to believe that after any mod that increases your airflow you should disconnect for a min of 15min then drive the car around hard for a couple of days.
I've read some people even claiming to leave it disconnected for at least 6h or overnight.....overkill or what (I just read it today)
This could be a myth populated by all the BMW forums but it's free and it may or may not work on the butt dyno.

from what I've read... there are 2 different opinions...
if you disconnect the battery, then you don't need the 200miles+ run-in to flash the adaptation ROM...
I've also read that... disconnecting the battery does not reset throtto adaptation....

I agree the AFE looks good, but I (along with others) have been very vocal on the other forum balking at the "design" aspect not matching the relatively high price. I just can't believe something that is the same design as all the current CAI's out there (Conforti, K&N, ECIS, etc) costs double just because it's larger in diameter tubing??? Oh I forgot, M3 owners are all billionaires!
Apparently K&N is coming out with a less expensive one very soon. I am not crazy about the gauze filters anyway and prefer the reticulated foam, but maybe there will be a retrofit for the ITG filters...

I am happy with my Dinan set up, but I want something that is more track oriented, teh Dinan is perfect for day to day though. Its Glenspeeds fault, his track event really got me hooked.

it shouldn't be rocket science to source an ITG filter and intake tube to fit the M3 intake tract for way less than $650 US....we don't all have Pej's mod budget!
well, as soon as I get my suspension sorted I can enjoy the car again :crying: I will probably leave it until the spring and either go back to stock or get the TC Kline or Ground Control setup...after the 3rd alignment it's much better, harsh but better...

Yah I think using Koni based suspensions are the way to go (Dinan, GC, TCKline). I actually drove Mr D's car about 3 months ago with the Dinan stage 3 and it felt way less harsh than my stock suspension, so that was pretty surprising. The H&R's are way harsher. The only differences between TC Kline and GC are that GC uses sleeve overs and Eibach springs, whereas TC does not use sleeve overs and VVS springs. Apparently GC gets some of their shocks from TC Kline...I am not 100% sold on the GC sleeve over design though....

I just had a revelation looking at the Carbonio pics.
why don't they just sell the intake adaptor portion separately so that I can go find an larger ITG filter to fit and forget all the CF parts. It would be very close to the AFE design and I am sure at less than half the cost. I would expect the intake adaptor should not cost more than $200 even closer to $100 CAD I would think...
I can make my own heat shield out of aluminum or steel sheeting.
