Pej should like this. Several different styles shown there.

Sometimes I wish I was shorter. Those small guys can twist their foot to the right and blip with their heel, which is not possible in most cars when you are 6ft tall since your legs are too tight.

This is one skill that I need to master. I just can't get the hang of it, I do it beautifully 1 out of 20 tries.

Pej;
Have you thought about adding material to your gas pedal? I know in some cars [example - 3rd gen rx7] that a lot of the guys would need to add an extension on to the gas pedal to make it easier. For the bmw, it is a little hard to master, but a few things can change the ease of heel & toe:

your have brake upgrades: during hard braking and heel and toe situation - is the brake pedal way below the gas pedal? a few things like this can make heel and toe very difficult...also - try changing shoes - you may find heel and toe much easier in shoes you haven't driven in before...

is it the position of your feet or rev-match that is hard in your car?

Its kinda both, I just can't get a good feel for it. I need someone to sit down and show me properly how to do it, and then work with me a bit I think. I have been trying to get it down, but just does not want to stick.

Great film however - front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive? In the WTCC today in the rain from GB, the front wheel drive cars had the number in the rain!

Hey Pej;
I am sure that after a few good sessions with somebody you will master the heel toe. if i troubleshoot the rest of the bugs for my track toy, i would be glad to sit in with you and give you a few pointers. when's the next shannonville track meet?

also - do you practice on the street? every downshift i make during daily commute is heel toe...it helps a lot. my porsche feels like an automatic now because i have the technique down to instinct. if not, when you are back, we'll catch up during one of the cruise/meets that are coming up.

Thanks for the offer. We are having a Dunnville meet on Aug 18th I think. I don't do it daily, worried I might mess it up and do some damage to myself and others, lol. But if I have room, then I do try it as much as I can. I think I just need someone to walk me through it and let me see it.

You should actually master it on the street first before even trying it on the track.

If you mess up a heal-and-toe while slowing down for a stop sign or a low speed corner nothing will happen, but you might end up spinning on the track if you screw up a shift.

I have big feet, so I try to do more of a roll, since it harder to shift my whole leg, but I just can't get the rhythm, do I blip it hard enough, when is the right time. 1 out of 20 times, it works.

Thought about it, but time and $$$ are not there right now. I was gonna do one at Laguna Seca, Im gonna be in Cali in Dec, but the timing didn't work out.

that is hilarious.... :yak:

practice, patience and time. it's not something one gets overnight. keep practicing, you'll get it soon enough.

Easier to do in our LGT than the M3, although with the sport mode on, its quite easy. You definitely need to get the hang of it for autoX though, otherwise your 2->1 shifts are going to be jerky, and you will spin

Which aspect is difficult for you, the foot position or the blip intensity?

It is amazing how little of the brake you have to put your foot on while still ensuring you have a good grip. I find e46 has perfect pedal placement, both brake and throttle feel like one pedal. As for the rev-match if you're a bit under with well timed clutch engagement it will be smooth. If you're a bit over, oh well, just ride it out and engage at the correct engine speed. I'd say 9/10 times, even if you missed the down-shift a little bit, you'll still be out of the corner and long past most other cars on the road. Eventually you'll be a pro then take it to the track.

above suggestions are for the street, personally I have no track experience and no M downshifting experience.

no matter how many things people tell you, you have go through this yourself. try to wear at least decent shoes to make things as easy as possible. don't be wearing stiff leather dress shoes with leather soles to try this...

Perfect! that's what I forgot to mention. Where the same shoes. If I change shoes I must re-adjust.

Well some days I have to wear, shirt/pants/tie to work, and other days I go in in scrubs, so shoes are changing all the time.
I was thinking of praticing with the car off, but shifting through the gears like that is not the best thing.
Something has got to give, Sebring is coming fast.

Wear a dedicated pair of driving shoes while in car, have dress shoes in the passenger footwell. Change apparel as needed, your car comes first.

Where's my consultation fee? :D

When you are getting up at 5am to be at work by 6am for a 14 hour day, the last thing on your mind is swapping shoes.
