Tracking gurus, I thought you could answer this for me. If you are driving along, minding your own business and the road is curving to the left...suddenly your back wheels start fishtailing (outwards, to the right)...which way do you turn your steering wheel to correct for this? Left or right? Thanks and sorry if this is really obvious....

Lis, if you had a Bimmer it wouldn't have fishtailed on you. :D

generally you steer towards where you WANT to be, so in this case you counter steer the opposite direction or to the right. controlling fishtailing is not only about countersteering but also timing of the countersteer itself. if you don't catch the slide early enough and you countersteer, you can make it oversteer to the otherside and back again and you keep on correcting. also if you were on the throttle when it came out, abruptly shutting the throttle can also contribute to making the car oversteer even more.

you generally want to correct in the opposite direction of the slide and once the car starts correcting turning back the steering towards centre. you need to start doing this once you catch the slide because if you wait too long you will have the fishtailing effect induced.

easy to say, hard to do....

thanks guys. I think new tires are also in order in my case...

Christopher - don't worry, when I have enough money to mod it, I'll buy it! :}: I guess I might have to come tracking to practice this!!! Even just as a passenger I'd would be fun.

thanks for the help again.

The best place to practice catching oversteer (fishtailing) is in the rain at a big parking lot that has no light poles. Just start driving in a big circle and increase speed until the tail comes out. If the front wheels are slipping before the rear then make the circle bigger.

Like Caddyshack says, an even better place to start is a Playstation with Gran Turismo 3 or 4 and a steering wheel. You can practice all you like before trying it for real.

I took a turn the other day with my 330 and my DSC off and the car fishtailed big time on dry pavement as I accellerated hard coming out of the turn. But like others have said I steered towards the direction I wanted to go I also had to coutner steer a little to straighen the car before I gased it again... and everything was good ;). Even if you drive a bimmer fishtailing is possible... it all depends on conditions, speeds, control and experience... :}:

when I fish at high speeds, i usually hit the brakes as hard as I can and put both hands over my ears (bc I tend to scream in a loud and pitchy way when this happens).

By the time I open my eyes the car has stopped.

Everyone should push their cars hard enough at some time or another to make it slide out....in a safe area....

without ever passing the limits of your car, you will never know exactly where the limits are....

Yorgi

Take up autocrossing; that will teach you at-the-limit and past-the-limit car control faster than any other method I am aware of. woot

My wife does this too except she keeps her foot in it and makes the spin more spectacular (and costly to repair).

Hmm...well it seems that I did correct for the oversteer properly in this case, but I think the suggestions about knowing the limits of the car are good. I'm not really a "typical woman / driver" (can I say that?!) ie: screaming, covering my eyes, braking every 10 seconds, nagging, insisting on anniversary gifts, playing mind games, and being frigid aren't in my nature. lol.

I did catch the slip just as it was happening, so I'm thinking that although I turned to the right (though I can't be sure I didn't overcompensate), it didn't help that my passenger grabbed my steering wheel and prevented me from then turning the wheel back to the left!!! *sigh*

thanks again guys!!!

get yourself out to a autocross or beginners lapping day where you can get instruction and learn how to control your car better. It's not about thinking, it's more about feeling, because alot of the time, the oversteer happens before you "notice" it, but you can feel it alot earlier. if you have to think about it, it's usually too late.

There are lots of AutoX events coming up. The next one is PITTL run by wired motorsports on June 11 at Bronte Go station. Safe lot to learn, there is absolutely nothing to hit, so it doesn't matter how many times you spin your car.

If you are interested in attending, chech here http://www.wiredmotorsports.com/pitl/

They are competitions, but don't worry about that. You won't be competitive for a little while, so just use the sessions to practice. They allow you to push the car to see how it handles in a safe area. You can't do the same thing on the street, or even in an open parking lot as you never know who might drive/walk into the lot.

@sugarxx, don't worry. First time I tried auto-x, I didn't even know where the cones are, not sure where to turn. I was all over the course. 2 mins course ended up in 3 mins, may be more :}:

But still, nobody laugh at me and give me some instructions.

why don't you come out to Fastlaps as an observer/passenger? We will have 4 club instructors and me that day, plus the Ariel Atom for demonstration runs that would give you alot of seat time and allow you to really experience something...

(If you guys are half as anal as Christopher is about his car, don't worry: I don't scuff up anything with my shoes as I enter/exit or sit in the car, I don't put purses/jackets on top of the car/hood, I don't scratch the inside door handles with my nails, I don't touch your radio, I don't eat or drink in the car, or drool on the fabric and I close the doors without leaving fingerprints!!! :}: )

I really want a ride in the Atom - I'll see if I can get the day off though.

it might take a bit more than that to get in my car... j/k there will be plenty of instructor level drivers there that you can probably ride in a different car throughout the day. it's a very fun and casual day and lots of nice people with nice cars...
