View Full Version : Cornerbalanced the car today

did the cornerbalance thing today and very happy. had a perfect alignment done by Tino, but car seemed to want to turn left easier than right. very subtle here, so don't be thinking is was a big deal. So thinking of seeing what the cornerweights were just to check if that was doing something.
Got the car on the scales wasn't too badly off, about 108lbs differential in front and 76 difference in the rear. Reading the scales, Paul said it would give me the handling I described above.
With a few adjustments we got it to about 40 differential in front and 23 in rear with ride heights equal in front and 1/4" difference in rears.
final corner weights with me in the car and 1/2 tank of fuel:
928 888
864 887
I need to buy an adjustable swaybar link to get the weights a bit closer as there is probably some preload on the bar at this point, but that will be next time. Good thing is he offered to do it again with the adjustable swaybar link for free next time...and this time only charged me $150 for the two hours it took. Highly recommend this guy if anyone wants it done.

Fuuuk that...no way would I pay that much...
I guess depending on how much work there is involved...but this guy is great. Former racer, tunes cars for Grand Am, Targa Newfoundland, etc....
Opposite from Sam's Garage, so convenient to do the alignment then pop over for the cornerweight.
I should post my alignment numbers too they came out so perfect....

You do the corner, then the alignment, or the other way around? I have it done twice, but the fee was for both.

I had my alignment done by Tino, but the car slightly pulls to the right. Would Corner Balancing the car, fix that ?

it shouldn't "pull" to the right. cornerbalancing is fine tuning the suspension of the car.
if the alignment was done right (and if Tino did it, it was) then check stuff like tire pressures and ride heights as those could be off. also post your alignment specs.

I have checked the pressues and Tino did the ride hieghts..the steering wheel is straight, but the car will drift to the right slightly. I don't have the alignment spec's after he put in the TCK camber plates...if I remember correctly camber was like -2.25 F and -2 rear.

You are running way to much camber for street bros. The more camber you run, the more the car will dart around upfront too on the street. I would bring it back down to about -1.5 for street and then back up for Auto X and track.
nilM3

yes it is aggressive for the street, but don't have the time to go back and forth.

You have camber plate though, so its easy to adjust.
The best thing to do, is when the alignment is done, set the degrees of camber you want, mark them on the plates, cause what you see is not always accurate, so its better to do it when its on the machine, so its accurate, and you mark it on the top of the camber plates. Then you do your alignment taking those 2 numbers(camber for track, camber for street) into consideration, and then its easy to get exacly the camber you want for street and track. Im assuming TCK plates are like GC ones.
I have not done this yet myself, but it was suggested to me and going to have it done for sure next time. Im only running -1.8 right now.

great idea, maybe TIno will through it on the machine again, I will mark it up and then go over and get the CB done.

Im gonna have to get it done myself. Tino is at Sam's garage? I just had an alignment and corner balance, so I hopefully its not to $$ to get it done. But its the best thing to do. They should take toe, and all other things into account too, when you decide on your 2 camber numbers, since other parameters change too when you change camber, so that it all works together at either number.

Yah, Tino is the only guy that does alignments for BMW's. He's one of the two brothers that owns the garage with the father Sam. They know their shiiite and are 100% honest. Last time I was there they had a Testarossa engine out, a Murcielago and 360 in there alongside some minivans...
Do not even mention this, but they are so good, the last time I went back to change my left control arm AND do the alignment again because of the clunk, he didn't want to charge me anything. I insisted on paying for the alignment at least, but that's how good they are. I went in this morning before the corner balance and they put the car on the lift, removed the chassis brace and retightened everything and again no charge....
you find me another garage that will do that.

you also have to make an appointment with Paul at Brant Design for cornerbalancing too.

Kewl, I will call them up and talk to them about it, cause I want to mark my camber plates and all that jazz. I remember Bob from one of your events, it was when we had all the noobs. We had some good battles, he didn't have that much power back then, lol.
Did you make appointment Sam's and the corner balance place for the same day at the same time, or do they work together.
Can you post their numbers, thanks Glen.

Tino is a GREAT guy. I had my alignment done at his garage once, and I went back a year later to get some break fluid from him and he still remembered me.
I didn't have cash on me, so he said just to take the fluid and come back whenever I have time and drop off the money. I couldn't believe it, I didn't know what to say, but then luckily I found a bank card and paid him.
who does that these days?

Glen,
Im gonna try to head out there the first week I'm back. Aug 17th or so.
So I do the alignment first, then the corner balance? My car is already corner balanced, the alignment might be all I need.
Any suggestions on camber?
I was thinkin -1.7 for street and -2.5 for track. Need to figure it out first, so they can mark it on my camber plates.

align first then cornerbalance. I would call Tino then Paul to setup the time to do both. Paul who does the cornerbalancing, if he puts it on the scales and everything is fine, I doubt he would charge you...so it might be worth it to just check it again.

let me know when you are going as I will go too. I have to get Tino to check my alignment just to straighten my wheel a tad. I think because we were messing around so much on the rack with my bushing problem the front wheels weren't sitting perfect when he did the alignment...no biggie, but I want perfection!

pulling to either direction is usually caused by uneven camber between left/right. it is less noticeable with normal sized street tires, but when you put super wide super sticky tires it can be very noticeable. I think having very wide rims/offset also excerbates the problem. This is the main reason I need to get camber plates for my car next season. I used the minor adjustment with the stock plates but still need more adjustment...

that is within the range of OEM plus I moved the strut mounts inboard by taking out the pin. so not that surprising with the extra adjustment which probably adds about -.5

you don't have to get it exact. put it this way, the minute you sit in the car, put gas in it, breath on it, the numbers will change anyway.
0.1mm of toe is so neglible a difference...you breath on the control arm and the toe will change 0.1mm

you do CB after alignment. the CB is like super fine tuning of the handling, but you have to obviously have the right alignment to begin with.
