View Full Version : G35 vs. ZHP

i just went on a test drive in a co-worker's G35...in my personal opinion, i would never get a G, but it is a powerful car (280hp). It was my first time driving the car, and i was quite disappointed with the acceleration...there's a definite lag in the acceleration. it handles well, but on turns i would have to say that the 330 handles better. we tested the performance b/w the G35 and the 330Ci on an abandoned road. we started off head to head...but the 330 was able to accelerate faster and maintain control....in the end...I was approximately 2 to 3 cars ahead of him. not sure if there were other factors involved that could've caused the difference (i.e. both of our trunks were empty)...
oh well...that was my thrill for the night woot woot

i test drove the g35 coupe b4 i decided to get the 330 ... the G doesn't feel like it has 280 hp at all .. especially on Highway .. but i never thought its even slower than the zhp (235 hp ?).. and by 2 to 3 car lengths ? thats just doesn't feel right ... maybe ur firend forgot to switch gaer ?

Your experience with G35 acceleration is the same as what was reported on other Bimmer forums, especially since you have a ZHP. Apparently G35 is a dog in 1st and 2nd gear and only begins to move in 3rd gear.
As far as Bimmer handling, not every 330 has a Sports Suspension Level 2. It is noticeably better than Sport Suspension Level 1 (I drove both on street and track), and I can only guess how soft non-sport suspension models are.
I always get a chuckle when I hear a commercial for a cheap lease rate of base 320 or 325 with no sports suspension at all, being advertised as having legendary BMW handling [Sorry to base 320/325 owners but you owe to yourself to test drive Sport Level 1 or even better Level 2 suspension to experience the handling difference].
P.S. I know that all car magazines comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt, but it is still a fun read (Go to last Page 8 and take a look under Performance column for each car)
http://www.infiniti.com/m/cma/i/pre/press_g35cp_automobile_nov2002.pdf
It should be stated that ALL other mainstream car magazines rate basic 5-speed 330Ci (non ZHP) at 6.1 - 6.3 seconds for 0-60. So I am not sure how Automobile magazines squeezed 5.9 seconds

interesting article...i'd have to disagree with the aggressive driving part tho. i think the 330ci offers a more aggressive driving experience, but i'm biased :p it's not all about hp...some companies will overstate/understate the performance of their vehicles. look at what happened to the mazda rx8...didn't they publicy acknowledge that they overstated the hp on that car? ;)

Agreed.... I have a friend at work, who recently got the Acura TL, and he constantly brags about how it's better than e46 coz it got 270bhp, voice-activated nav, dvd-audio, bluetooth...blah blah blah......
sure the TL will reach the next traffic light quicker, but when it comes to twisties.......hmmmm

nice comparison, Diana...
I had extensive experience with the G -- my wife works at Nissan head office.
Nice styling, great exhaust tone...that's it.
Definite lag, 'plastic fantastic' interior, uncomfortable seats, pretty good handling...
Opinion of course, but I feel the BMW streets ahead of the G...

It was nice to hear that your ZHP with only 235hp can beat a G35 with 280hp. I know both cars are not dragstrip monsters but it goes to show you that the BMW I6 with Vanos is underrated and the G35's V6 is overrated or the gearing is just not there in 1st and 2nd gears.
I wonder how it would do on the hwy from say 100-150.....?

Track proven... Saridi's G35 exit corners much faster than my 330 do... even though I might have a higher speed during the corner... the G35 rocks from 100-180km/h... but the OEM non-Brembo brakes SUCKS so badly!!! Smokes came out from the brake after 5 "0-100-0 run"... :blaaaa:
I've it on video to prove...
I guess on a rolling start the G35 has more benefits from the 3.5L engine...

Nice work Diana woot
We know that the hp numbers on many other manufacturers dont really mean much in comparison to BMWs. The G35 sounds and looks nice on the outside, but it somehow still feels 'cheaper' than the 330. NOt to say the G35 is not a great car mind you, but our preference is obvious here. :D

Can a Acura guy also say that a 745 is faster than my RSX-S on stright line, but when it comes to twisties.....hmmmmm
An TL is a huge car when comparing to the E46. And actually, TL is originally designed as a boat! I dun think my TSX is handle ne worst than my 328i. Yes, it is FWD, it understeer on fast corner that E46 won't but still it can make a corner faster than my E46.
Also the JDM RX8 is really 260hp but because of the NA emission regulation that cause to de-tune it. But even an 225hp RX8 will still able to beat E46(except M3) on any road! and still have a slick smooth manual box instead of the slugglish one on the E46! :blaaaa:

We should always keep in mind that BMWs are luxury class also so its not a straight racing car. We also pay for the quality craftsmanship, better looks, materials, etc. as opposed to just power numbers. Comparisons of speed are not why we buy these cars!!
Otherwise, we'd all be driving Mustangs, etc. :D

If BMW was only for go...then it wouldn't have the name it has today. I doubt any normal driver will understand what the big deal is until you actually drive one. Even in a 3 series that is 5 years old...the interior quality seems wayyy ahead of its time to me. I'm still fascinated by the L/100km gauge :D

Yes, I am biased like most of us here. :D And no doubt all of us read lots of articles of putting BMW 3-series (E36 and E46) as number 1, but this first paragraph is probably my all time favourite (decided to find the link when TSX was mentioned):
http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=19&article_id=4195&page_number=1
The one consistent truism in the modern car business is this: To say unkind things about the BMW 3-series is to reveal yourself as an infidel or idiot. Possibly both. So pervasive is the acceptance of 3-series superiority in sports sedans that seemingly not a month passes when some carmaker isn't selling us on its new 3-series copy. Imitation remains the sincerest form of flattery. Many are good cars, some are good enough to make our 10Best list, but none beats the 3-series at its own game
Ian:
E46 can be ordered with 3 different suspension options and that's not including M3. Consequently, there will be varied experiences of E46 handling depending on which one you drive.
And as far as RX8, it is over 300lbs lighter than E46 with similar power, so no surprises there. E46 should be compared against cars in its class.
BMW is and always was about balance - perfect blend of luxury, performance, comfort, safety and prestige; after all, they invented Sports Sedan category.

well said! i also agree that you cannot compare the E46 to an RX8 because it is in a totally different class....the RX8 does not have the same feel and luxury of an E46.
