Our First advanced Driving School at Calabogie will be held 21-22 Oct, here's the details as they stand now:
September 2006 will see the opening of a new race track: Calabogie at 5 km long and 20 corners. Located 45 minutes outside Ottawa, Ontario, the track joins Mosport and Mont Tremblant in the excellent tradition of challenging Canadian race tracks.
The BMW Car Club of Ottawa will be hosting one of the first Advanced Driving School at Calabogie 21-22 October 2006 and registration is now open
on-line via karelo. In addition, as an added incentive, if you attend this driving school, you will be credited with a discount of $50 for our next school in 2007 at Calabogie. That's a 10% discount. Instructors interested in participating should reply directly to me.
We expect to be able to offer 3 hours of track time each day along with in-class instruction and a dedicated in-car instructor. The school will follow the usual high standard of the BMW Club Canada format and rules. This is not a race school or a lapping day, it is an advanced driving school.
Given the late start to the season with Calabogie opening in September and the limited notice, we would greatly appreciate your assistance in getting the word out to as many people as possible.
In addition to the great personalized instruction from the pool of talented instructors, this event is tax deductible (Canadian students only). Read your auto insurance policy carefully for exclusions due to "track events". This is not a race or timed event. In-car cameras and timing devices are prohibited and will be removed.
Additional details will be forthcoming. However some basic information:
Schedule:
A. Registration will begin at 7 am
B. Instructor's meeting will begin at 8 am
C. Driver's meeting will begin at 8:30 am
D. First student run group 9 am

Oh my gawd, that place is massive! It reminds me of the Nürburgring Nordschleife!
I thought the track width was fine. You can go 2 wide with plenty of room.
Almost no curbs yet but you are right, lots of guard rail. I guess hitting armco beats hitting a tree.

yep, it's a long track, but looks really nice and good combination of technical turns and high speed stuff...
hope they pave/gravel/smooth out the run-off areas and make it really nice. I'm tired of the crap they have at Shannonville. They really should do a better job of the off areas and make them nicer like any other decent track.

WTF? You don't like the ruts in the grassy areas either do ya? What a whiney whiney you are... the rocks and the ruts add character to the course.
:D
Wow, Calaboogie looks too advanced for me. I need more width for spinouts!!!
The track width looks about the same as Shannonville's. I think the camera lens makes it deceptive.
It will definitely punish mistakes. Lots of elevation changes in / near corners with little run-off before the barriers... like Mosport with more opportunities to goof per lap.
However, the configuration looks awsome. This track has character!

I don't think anyone will want the dubious honor of being the first person to wreck his car at Calabogie, so if I'm there I am going to take it real easy and learn the track...
they got lots of work to do to make the run-off areas actual areas you can run-off and still keep your car in one piece...

I hope whatever those dark mounds are in the video are removed from trackside at the very least.

Interesting info on the sound restrictions at Calabogie. I think this will seriously hamper their ability to have races there and it's looking like it may at the end of the day work for limited cars. Check out the comment on the Z06...this would not bode well for cars like Ferrari's....
Just a heads up to the racers planning on attending. This may not have been clearly communicated at all, but calabogie has noise restrictions. As I was there on Monday, this is the TRACK'S PROCEDURES, and not imposed by the organizing club.
There is a static test, basically in the paddock, they make you rev the engine blipping the throttle three times quickly to 2/3 of your redline and measure your sound level from the front and rear. If I recall correctly, anything under 95dB is considered a pass. over 95 and you may be allowed on the track but you will be monitored and if you are perceived to be too loud you will be black flagged. It really doesn't matter what 'number' I quote you to meet, as it is subjective. If the operations manager thinks your car is too loud, then it is too loud. The driver will then either have to moderate the throttle to keep revs/sound down, or be asked to come off the track and attempt some additional form of quieting. ie, cars with open pipes are going to have a challenging time to stay on the track.
Again, this is not mandated by MCO, it's a track thing. So... you've been warned.
FWIW: Their tests had our Integra at 92dB front 82 rear and our Jetta GLI (1.8T) at 91 front, 81 rear. Both cars have cold air intakes and OEM exhausts. We didn't have any issues with sound levels - though other Hondas did. A Z06 was measured at 103dB (supposedly stock) and was too loud for the track.
So, I recommend that any racecar coming up this weekend do their best to fit a muffler on their car - or one may find challenges ahead on the weekend. Don't get your knickers in a twist over this - it is part of the new environment we live in. If you want to play, be reasonable, do it their way. Seriously the track is fun, and the effort is worthwhile. Also, it will give you a chance to make sure you get it right now for next year's race there. I have already put another muffler on my Jetta. I hope it is quiet enough. Now, I'm a bit worried about the intake noise side, as I have open filter twin mikuni carbs and they howl...

I don't think you will pass. I would def get it checked before you make the trip, or slap the stock muffler back on for the event.

The noise restrictions are the same as tremblant. Last week we had an issue with just one crazy Carbon Fibered Mustang who couldnt run. My MINI was spitting out 91db from the rear during the test. Do a check or just lift a bit when you go by the straight.
the track is absolutely amazing. I've put a couple of videos in my blog which is on my site: electricpixel.org (http://www.electricpixel.org)

Just got back from Calabogie and WOW! despite the cold weather today and even light snow/sleet/rain in the afternoon, the track experience was great!
What a beautiful track, incredibly complicated but oh so rewarding when you get it right. Tons of blind apexes, off camber corners, linked turns, long sweepers. It will take you a whole day just to remember which way to turn. It will take you the rest of the day to remember where you can carry speed and where you need to brake because of the blind turns, but once you get into a turn and setup the line properly...heaven.
It is such a well designed track and it flows so incredibly well. Lots of elevation changes and lots of undulating track so it keeps it so interesting and fun. Even at slow speed it's so much fun to drive because it's so smooth and nice. 40 feet wide EVERYWHERE per FIA specs and new paving means super smooth and grippy. 23 turns so LOTS to remember and learn. Long track as well 5km!!
First few laps with Hagen telling me where to go I still looked and felt like a virgin lapper...bit embarrassing the first time as I was in the instructor group and everyone else had the benefit of 2 full days of lapping.
Great turnout, tons of great cars, nice people and if only the weather would have been nice, an all around great way to end the season at a new track.
Drive from TO was long. 1.5hrs to Belleville, then another 3 hours to go 200km up to Calabogie on 80km single lane highways. Going up I got lost and god knows where in the back woods I was...scary as no cell phone coverage and no one for miles and you'd see a car maybe every 1/2 hour...and this was Saturday afternoon!
Stayed at the Calabogie Peaks Resort and it's only 15min away from the track. Great accomodations and really nice place/resort to stay. I'll definately go back again and stay there.
Met up with George (GeoS) today and rode with him for a session in the Audi. He drove great and definately knew the track better than me! Thanks for the ride George!

no problem, just under the sound check limit. I registered 93 db and I think the limit was 96.
They make you rev to 2/3's and check the sound from front and rear standing about 15 feet away. I didn't quite rev to exactly 2/3's just to help a bit... :D

Hey Glen, it was great getting together.
I know what you mean about the drive up. My wife and I drove up on Friday afternoon. She kept asking where I was taking her as we rarely saw any other traffic.
It really is an awsome / challenging track! For most of the 1st day I was hesitant on several of the corner sequences... I kept thinking "after this blind crest... is it full out or was this one the hard braking zone?":confused2
The weather was the only thing that could have been better. On Saturday morning one of my tire valves froze open after pumping up the pressure. Had to quickly get the cap on and drive around to get the tire temp up. That was a first!
Can't wait for spring! Hopefully get the M3 out next time.
