Here's the message I received from Mike @ www.ultimatecupholders.com (http://www.ultimatecupholders.com):

Hi Nathan:

I don't do group buys a lot but I can. Generally, the way that I've done it
in the past is for quantity 1-5, you can use the standard discount pricing
that I have for CCA members. It's $19.99 US each, plus $5 US shipping, and
you can use the order form here:
http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/order-discount.html They'd go via air
mail to Canada versus Priority as here in the US.

For 6 and up, they'd be $18 each. The shipping cost varies by weight so it
would depend on the number. I just charge whatever the actual rate is. At
quantity 10, the weight packed would be about 5 lbs. That would be either
$18 via parcel post or $22 via Global Express.

You can mix and match things however you'd like as far as models and colors.

Thanks, appreciate your interest. Please let me know if you have any
questions and I'll be happy to help.

Mike

So I figure if we get 10 going, shipped to my house and then distributed at a meet, it'd be USD$20 shipped each (subject to any GST/PST slapped on by the gov't. (10 @ $18 each plus $18 shipping = US$198)

Last time I ran a swaybar group buy for the Mazda3 club, I got burned because some members committed but flaked out at the end. I'm going to require prepayment before I order. If people'll prefer someone else to run this, I'm okay with that too!!!

I can email transfer you the money. Which address do I send it to?

Oddly, they don't list the E36 on the dropdown menu on the ordering page. Maybe shoot mike an e-mail.

Tentatively, I'd be interested in black felt...

are you guys serious?!?

whats wrong with the oem one? now I understand if you have the oem removed in place of something else but I dont know if I would want a cup rubbing against my leg or spliage on the carpet especially if I accidentally kick it. I cant imagine how much dust or crap would fall into my drink during the drive as well.

I dunno why our experiences are so different with these cupholders. I don't like them at all. Placement is not ideal and they don't hold stuff as well as I'd like them to.

My drinks are usually covered with a lid or cap... Dunno how dirty it could possibly get thru regular driving.

I've had mine for close to two years now. You cannot kick them and it doesn't rub against the driver's or passenger's leg. Dust and crap falling in isn't an issue unless you use the interiour of your car as a woodshop.

Honestly, the stock ones are not bad for holding stuff like medium sized Timmies, but I usually use it for water bottles.

A water bottle placed in the front holder gets in the way of shifting. Placing it in the rear holder means you have to have the armrest up.

For about $20US, I would prefer to not have to compromise during driving.

I don't find there's necessarily anything wrong with the cupholders themselves... I just don't like the placement. Even with automatic I like to place my arm on the armrest so taller containers in the front holder makes things awkward. I also really hate having to lift the arm rest to get to the second cupholder.

I'm not sure if I'll like these "ultimate" cupholders or not, but I'm willing to give them a try. If I do like them, I'll yank out the OEM cupholders and replace them with a euro tray so I can have some extra storage.

Jiver

Hey, the Euro Tray sounds interesting.

I would have like the two OEM cup holders to placed somewhere else other than where they are now. I also like to drive with the armrest down. It is a pain to flip up the arm rest when my passenger also has a drink. And, yes, a tall water bottle does get in the way of shifting.

I would like to find out where I could get one of those Euro Trays and if they come in grey? Is there a place local?

Thanks...

Gordon

You can order them through you local BMW parts counter, or maybe through Chris?

Above is for E46 coupe, maybe different for sedan. They come in either black or grey... Item 12 (or 1, if you want to replace the coin holder also). About $55 at the dealer, if I recall correctly.

re E36 holders
Hi Mark:

Unfortunately, not at the moment. I'm in the process of changing the more
universal version that I had that should be fine. They'll work in about the
same way/location and I expect that cost will be the same. Probably at
least a month away at this point though. If you'd like, I'll keep your
e-mail and drop you a note when those are here and ready to go.

Thanks, appreciate your interest.

I think a new version is coming out in about a month. Maybe we should wait...

Hi Nathan:

Yes, I'd replied to Reg earlier and copied you on that e-mail. Hopefully
that made it to you.

Just to be sure, as I mentioned in the other note, if all of these are for
the E46, then you guys may want to hold off for a month or so when I'll have
something that I think may work a little better in the E46. The current
versions are OK, but the E46 is kind of right at the limit as far as the
height at the side of the tunnel and I've seen more variance in how tightly
the holders fit in some cars. You can adjust things to that they'll fit OK
in any of them, but I think that the new versions will be a better way to
go. I can't promise an exact date since I'm dependent on an outside vendor
for a part that I have to have made, but I'm hoping to have them ready
within the next month or so. They'll work in basically the same
way/location and I expect the price to be the same.

Thanks again. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be
happy to help.

Mike

Sounds like a good idea. I'm in no particular rush to get these, and it's good of him to give us the heads-up. Like everything else we put on the cars, it's gotta be the best

So I guess this can be a pre-order kinda list then...

I contacted Mike a while ago (end of May or so) about resurrecting the GB. I haven't heard from him since, he was waiting for some things at the time. If you do get in touch with him, I'd be interested in ordering a pair also. I haven't had the time to really follow up with him after the initial email.

Here was his response:

Hi Peter:

Sorry so slow getting back... As below, I was waiting to hear back today from someone and thought that I might have more information but that didn't happen.

In any case, I had to kind of go back to the drawing board with the new versions. I needed to have a part injection molded and never could find anyone who could do what I wanted at anywhere even close to a cost that would make it workable. I've gone in a different direction now and I'm waiting to hear back from a new vendor who I think may actually come through this time. I probably won't know where that stands until early next week though. I do have the older versions. They work OK in the E46 but I think that the new will be better in that car. If you can, bear with me through early next week and I should be in a better position to tell something as far as that's concerned.

I don't expect the pricing for the holders to change much either way.
Shipping to Canada went up quite a bit as of last week. There is no more parcel post and I think that the least expensive Priority Mail is ~$27 US.
I can't give you an exact shipping cost at this point, but I'd guess that my estimate below would increase by about 25% to 40% depending on the number/weight. Again, once I know more as above, I can give you a more accurate estimate.

I'll drop you a note early next week and let you know where things are and if you're interested we can go from there.

Thanks for checking back,

Mike
