Hey guys, looking to get a car alarm. 02 E46 coupe. I don't have the factory alarm installed thinking about it but ideally would like something with 2 way on it. What do you guys have installed and how you like it and also do you recommend a good perfectionist installer.
Thanks,
Cheers.

The Compustar pager is by far the most popular 2 way. There is also the boomerang if you are really paranoid.

these type of alarms also help your insurance i believe. as far as installers - couldn't help you there.

One of my clients has the boomerang installed. They claim to have the ability to find the car within 30 min of it being stolen within North America. They install it and apparently, won't even tell the owner the location of the GPS unit.
Didn't ask him the cost, but he did say there's an annual maintence fee for monitoring/tracking.
Not 100%, but I think this is the same technology the exotic car rental companies use to monitor whether you're taking their cars to the track.

there is a yearly fee for the boomerang, my friend has one. they refuse to tell him where the unit is located on the car!
i have it installed in my car. and what the others have said they wont tell the Owner where the unit is installed and the cost is about $550 for the part and the labour depends on the store. Then they find your car in 15mins not 30mins. and they can even track the car in underground parking lots, and they have a garuntee that if they cannot find it they will give u $10,000 ontop of what the insurance company gives you.

OEM is the way to go, it fits right in, works with your key, and wont give you any issues. I have aftermarket alarms on all my cars except my M3, and they were all a pain in the ass!!!
I thought about a Boomerang unit on my M3 after my SLK was stolen, but I figure if they steal it, they can keep it, I don't want it back, who knows what they have done to it.

That's what I thought too and also it's nice and clean all the wiring already there.

Oh... so you are familiar with the system then. Version P comes with piano wire.
Version B is a plastic bag.

I was refered to a car alarm company who deals with BMW Mississauga. I spoke to him and he was right on the ball. He knows BMW's inside out and told me he can use a viper oem alarm that will work exactly as the factory bmw alarm. the price is half price of the oem alarm and i can use my existing key and all. he will use the existing wiring and even the same plugs. viper makes an oem kit to work with bmw alarms. I want 2 way pager so he can do that as well with all the oem wiring and harness. Once I
get er done i'll let you guys know how it all went.

How was the installation? I am also in consideration for an alarm for my car too. Two options in my head are either go with OEM or Clifford Matrix. The advantage on the Clifford is it has 2 way paging and remote start. Anyone has any opinion?

The dude never called me back. From reading the Alarm thread on the forum I almost see no point in getting aftermarket unless I go 2 way but I doubt he would be able to use the stock wiring so starting to look for the oem alarm. From what I read the install seems straight forward.

Do you know what the model number is on this unit?
The only reason I want an alarm is since I sometimes park in downtown for work, I dont want someone to break in just to look to see if i have any change in the car. I couldnt really care less if someone steals it. Obviously if someone steals my car they want it. They can have it. I wouldnt ever want it back.

I wish I can get one, but a lot of ppl doesn't want to deal with puting remote starter on a manual car. I guess is the liability issue :Idunno:

Thats odd. There are several excellent units out there. I used to be in the industry and never had a problem with any of the manual transmission units.
Some are just a bit trickier to get them into "Ready mode" (basically so the starter knows that the car is in neutral) some units were next to impossible for some people. (women) :}: not saying all women, but a fair share of them were unable to figure out the ones that involved several processes everytime you were about to get out of the car.
Same thing goes for older people. my favorite is the compustar.

Any reputable install shop would have no problem doing that for you. I dont know about out east, but in Edmonton a real high percentage of brand new vehicles come with them "Dealer installed" Whenever you buy a new car, you pretty much just ask them to throw it in.
