View Full Version : Q for those with impact driver

My portable impact driver that I will use to make it easier to change tires at the track has a 3/8" hex connector, not a 1/4" or 1/2" square connector. I was able to find an adapter to attach 1/4" sockets, but I'm really looking for a 1/2" adapter. That, or a 1/4" to 1/2" adapter. I can't find either of those at the various Home Depots, Crappy Tires or Ronas around me. Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

it doesn't sound like you have what is needed to take bolts off the wheels. you need a torque wrench not a impact driver. and if it is cordless, something that fits 1/4" probably wouldn't have enough power to remove bolts anyways.

this wouldn't be the Motormaster impact driver would it?

Mikita 18V cordless impact wrench/driver (turns out it has a 1/4" hex not a 3/8" hex connector on it).
It has more than enough power to spin the nuts. Once tight I torque them with a torque wrench, and to break them loose I use a star wrench.
And I just got off the phone with Atlas Supply on Queen St. downtown T.O. and they have the 1/2" adapter I need.
Thanks guys.

Excellent. I'm surprised it didn't come with a 3/8" square end in the first place with a 1/2" adaptor. What else would you use an impact driver for that doesn't require a 3/8" or 1/2" end?

It seems the cordless ones don't, unless you want to spend $600 on the monster Dewalt 36V. It's also useful for just putting screwdriver bits directly into the wrench and using it that way.

I have 1/2" drive Dewalt cordless impact wrench. it removes the bolts without a star wrench.
Interesting timing with this thread as I'm looking for a cordless torque / impact gun.
I was looking at the CT cordless 14.4V impact/torque gun on sale for $130 (was $250)...good...1/2" square...good...spec'd at 1050 in-lb..........87 ft-lb...D'OH.
I know of Hondas that make more torque! Clearly not intended for lug nut removal (even though the web site has a pic showing it being used for that purpose).:confused2
Looks like I will have to break down and get something like the 18V Dewalt (300 ft-lb) for $400 at Sears. The 36V would be realy cool. Anyone know of other local sources?
Glen, I saw at the last track day that you have a Dewalt (actually we all did when we were just standing there watching you swap wheels). Happy with it? Would you get the same / different?

The 18V Dewalt I have is great. If I was buying again I would probably go for the 300ft-lb one so that nothing would get in the way, but mine at 138ft-lbs works fine all the same. I got mine off ebay and saved a bit of money. I have no issues with mine in any event and as you saw it got the job done and removed the bolts with no issues, no thanks to you guys standing around... :yak:
The other reason I went with Dewalt is that the batteries are readily available pretty much anywhere and they are universal to all Dewalt 18V.

I have the CT one and it is not enough to break the nuts. I wish I had got the Dewalt one. It is less than $400 on ebay. Just get the unit only without battery to save tax and shipping. You can get the battery at home depot.

US$135 unit only + US$34 shipping
US$195 unit + battery + charger + US$44 shipping = C$265
Much better than the local pricing, even taking duty into account.
The battery at HD is $128. Why does Canadian pricing have to be so out in left field?
I think I might go for the combo...now to go and explain to the significant other why I need this item...

tell her it will only take 1/2 the time it normally did to swap rims with this baby and thus free up more of your time for her...

Tell her only real men have impact wrenches, thus you must have one. That, and give her a gift certificate to Holt Renfrew, for no reason at all.

I've been using the "safety" pitch with good results.
As in... The rear subframe bushings are shot. It is not safe to track the car with them. Since the suspension is disassembled, I got a "few extra things" to do at the same time (all front and rear poly bushings, coilovers, camber plate, rear toe/camber kit, front /rear reinforcement kits).
Actually, I think I'm the high maintenance one in the relationship. :p She is a good sport about the whole car thing. She will even get up early and watch the F1 races with me.
I'll try the "this is not for me it is for you" and the "man tool" scenarios this weekend for fun. Thanks for the tips. :)

I have the DeWalt DW059 kit. Unit, 2 batteries, charger and a case.
http://www.dewalt.com/us/products/tool_detail.asp?productID=6347
I actually bought it on Amazon and had it shipped to a US address and picked it up.

I bought it about 2 years ago and I've been swapping tires for my car, wife's car, inlaws cars, my parents cars and occasionally different friends cars at home ever since. Don't get this tool because other ppl will ask you change tires for them.

Glen - Yes, despite the rusty E30 M3, I'm an M.D.:) By the way, I won't get my hands dirty either. I've got medical students, interns and residents. I should bring them as my pit crew next time. "Non-volunteers" will fail their rotation.:p
Lastly, the wife thinks that my "internet car buddies" are a bad influence.:yak:

yah, the forums are a very bad place if you want to keep your hard earned $$$ for the kids education fund...
you should treat your interns like they do in Grey's Anatomy...coffee, dry cleaning, track day duties...

Do you have the contact for the ebay power seller?
