Just bought a wheel holder pin from here, but they have marque specific tools that I don't even have a clue what they are used for...

I can't find it either.....

It would make life so much easier as I've taken the wheels off so many times to count.

Must clean off the calipers and backsides of the wheels every once and a while

Wow, didn't know there was a tool for that.. would've made my life a lot easier yesterday when I changed to the winters.

Eric, what do you use to clean the calipers and backshield? I used the brake cleaner one year but then read it wasn't good for the pads and corrodes them so I stopped using it.

it comes standard in Mercedes Benz car for some reason. If you have a MB, late model, no need to buy.

I just use off the shelf wheel cleaner and lots of brushing and water. I read about caliper cleaner being bad for your pads too so I decided not to use it.

Great tool: Wish I had it yesterday! Maybe we should do a group buy to save on shipping since you can probably fit 10 sets in one small box.

Thanks for the info Eric, will do that when I next change in spring. I also coat the hub and lugs lightly with WD40 to reduce rust build-up.

I don't mind arranging the group buy if there's enough interest. I'll lalso check out some local auto parts stores to see if they have something similar; maybe even the Mercedes part store :). The threads are probably standard.

OEM might not be as good from what I read...

Comment on the OEM tools from Ultimate Garage:

Manufacturers have recognized these problems to some degree and have included factory tools, apparently as a casual afterthought considering the quality of these products, to help guide the wheel onto the hub. BMW uses an arbor drift with a plastic tip (try holding the arbor, the wheel and the lug bolt with only 2 hands), Audi offers a plastic threaded hanger (I've got 2 with the threaded ends snapped off) and Mercedes includes an aluminum threaded guide with their sedans (a little weak in my opinion....Mercedes must think so too as they don't include one with the current M-class trucks).

Guys,

It looks like you are talking about something similar to this: Wheel Installation Guide Tool (http://www.ultimategarage.com/wheelhgr.html)

I actually had a local tool place (at Kennedy/Ellesmere) made me 2 of these (99% identical) wheel hangers last year (he offered CDN $20/piece with a week turn-around but I paid a bit more for next day pickup). It works great.
The only caveat is even though both were made to work based on Bimmers 12x1.5 thread, one tool screws-in all the way easily and another goes in only half-way of the threaded part.

I can show it to you next time we meet (mine is made from plain steel, but he told me afterwards he can do it in stainless steel for the same price)
If you guys like it, we can always try to organize a local group buy.

As far as a caliper compressor, C-clamp works well but here is another product from Canadian tire (I have it and works like a charm):

Disc Brake Pad Spreader Product# 25-6287-4, $17.49

Hi Everyone,

Here are photos of my wheel hanger tool (please keep in mind this one was done in plain steel and photos taken with a webcam). The group buy would be for the same one but made in stainless steel. If anyone changes their mind, please remove your name.
At this point, we will assume the cost of $20.
If I find out that the price is higher, I will post it before placing the order.
If your name is on the list, you will have to pay - no backing out :)
Should we leave this open for longer, if anyone else will sign up?

I can ask but most likely he will either not be able to do it OR it may add to his time and the actual cost.

>>> If you are ordering one, please assume it will NOT have anything engraved, and if he will be able to do it at the end, it will be a nice bonus.

so $20 for x2 alignment studs or for x1?

Interesting end tip, pliers and flat head screwdriver...I like his contingency planning....

So is it strong enough to support the weight of the wheel with 1 stud screwed in?

right now I use old pants, my upper legs and x2 hands to guide my wheel in when I don't have that tool....hum time to get my own

Hey Oyster,

One wheel hanger for $20. Definitely strong enough to support a rim & tire (at least i did not have any problems).

It will work the same way as this one (scroll down to "Using the Guide Tool"):

No problem. Just a word of caution, I will try to find out this saturday how long an order of approximately 11 units will take. Depending how busy he is, it may be one, two or three weeks.

Meaning, we may not have them ready before most of you will be changing to winter tires - in the next one to two weeks. So again, something to consider if you still want to place the order now.

I got fancy with torque wrench

got
1x micro 3/8 that goes to like 20lbs
1x regular 3/8
1x regular 1/2 needle cheepy one
1x regular 1/2

why do I need a 3/8 and 1/2? I guess since I got 3/8 and 1/2 sockets, it's better to use simple plug and play without adapters.

Hi Everyone,

I placed the order today for 14 Wheel hangers, including one for me :) (stainless steel at $20 per item, no engraving). It should be ready in 2 weeks on Sat Nov 20th.

If anyone else wants to get one, please let me know during the next week and I can always add to this order.

I inquired about engraving, but it will not look nice (he showed examples).
First option is to simply paint "E46TORONTO.CA) in dark grey (almost black) small letters (not really engraving).
Second option ($5+ on top of $20) is to engrave one letter at a time using pre-made bits with each letter on one end; However, for this option, he needs to flatten the rounded (shaft) surface and then hit each "bit" to imprint a letter; all letters in "E46TORONTO.CA" may not line-up 100% evenly on a line.
To do a formal, 3D (nice) engraving you need a machine that can engrave a complete word at once vs individual bits, and he does not have it.

Thanks a lot for organizing this.

I vote for any marking that doesn't add cost to the item with respect to marking it. I think 25% is excessive for some letters on the tool.

Thanks Alex for setting this up. I vote that we pass on the markings....i think it would make sense to include e46toronto on to something that we could wear (i.e. clothing/jewelery), but for a tool that we will only use once in a while when changing tires...it's not worth it if the cost is 25% of the price of the tool. It's a good idea...but i vote we pass on this.

Our cars use bolts and not lugnuts. With cars that have studs sticking out of the upright you can easily align and hang your wheel on it. With our cars we can't do that so we have to hold up the wheel while trying to align it so that the bolt can then thread through.

The GB tool we're getting will basically act like a temporary holder so that we can put the bolts on. Here's a pic showing an upright with studs:

This is one showing what it looks like on our car. Ignore the captions on the picture.

It's not tough to change a wheel but like many tools, it makes the job easier and a bit quicker.

no it's not, but the tool really helps especially if you run spacers...

put it this way, you can use the BMW car jack to jack up your car, but why would you want to use it when you can use a faster and better floor jack?

you can also use the BMW angled wrench bar, but again, why use it when you can use a faster, easier cross-bar or even better a compressed air or cordless torque wrench (he he)

this is a simple basic tool, that makes doing stuff like changing rims alot easier, especially in a confined space and when the car isn't at an optimal height. You ever try holding up a 19" wheel while lining up spacer and stud holes kneeling/crounching down with only a foot of space around the wheel when there is no light? :blaaaa:

M333ee

I could have used it last Friday when I swapped all 4 wheels over.... At least I didn't have to deal with a spacer anymore.

it does? got to see that in person. this from the side I assume?

with the Xi, my car settle and I can't get it under the middle front of the car
sort of, I need to only slightly lift the car with BMW jack to get it under. To get it under the front (i.e center jack points) you need to jack the side up a bit enough to get clearance then jack from there...

if you car is not lowered, the Michelin should be able to clear.

I bought the aluminum jack on sale the last time (thanks Santiago) and it is awesome. Low profile too, so it get's under my lowered car only with a little help...
Is it the same price you picked up for? I'm tempted. I may give my old floor jack to my dad to pick this one up.

no keep it

you need 2 jacks, use old one to jack up from the side then use new one to jack from the middle front or back

yes, keep it. I use the Michelin jack, my old 2 ton floor jack and the BMW scissor jack...
I actually find the scissor jack very useful because alot of times it's the only thing that will fit under stuff when I only need to lift a few inches with relatively low weight, plus it is very portable and light. It's a terrible jack though for actually lifting the car...

Is the centre jack point the same for all or most e46?

What about ramps, or is your car too low? I'm thinking about getting some ramps.

car is too low, forget it

go to home depot, get some 3 by 10 wood stud, cut in half, drive on top....some people have 2 layer wood planks

I used to have ramps, don't know where they are but you have to consider approach angle. Pull imaginery line from bottom middle part of tire to bottom of foremost front bottom of bumper

It should be the same, but make sure you know where it is first!

Of course, I can show you anytime.

got to meet Canuck328i in person again to visualize and see an in-person demo of how it works and what it does. Still not clear what this does besides reading code :Idunno:

does it reset them?
can you reprogram car key
can you reprogram preferences (auto door lock after x km/h)
can you reset service inspection indicator
