So I went to the lapping day at Shannonville today that was put on by Image Motorsports. Was a decent day, there were a LOT of Civic's there accompanied by Integra's & RSX's. If anyone's interested here are my general thoughts. FYI I have only attended a Fastlaps before this.

1) There was no drivers meeting or discussing of the rules. This of course led to some confusion as to the passing policy as well as general behavior. I preferred the Fastlaps version.

2) Passing was open, using hand signal OR blinker to indicate. HOWEVER some people decided that they didn't want to wait for signals and passed anyway on straights. Not I guess the worst place to pass but not courteous IMO.

3) A good number of the drivers were not experienced which is not an issue, but without a drivers meeting beforehand it leads to problems. Many drivers drove way beyond their capabilities and as such wiped out. I myself witnessed 6 ppl go off the track, several times in some cases. In another case I signaled I was pitting in and a guy took it to mean to pass on that side (the left). That almost ended poorly.

4) There was definitely a larger 'show off' quotient. For example, one guy pulled into the pits next to his friends and pulled in behind me, and came damn close to hitting my car cause he came in so fast, but he braked real hard and came about a foot from my bumper. He backed up and had a good laugh with his friends. If looks could kill... I wasn't impressed.

Personal lessons:

1) I know what a BMW Low Brake Indicator Lamp looks like now :)

2) Don't do 20-25 more laps after the indicator goes on or you'll have no pad left. Guess how I know...

3) Made a great improvement in my lapping from what I learned at Fastlaps, had some of the instructors' lessons going through my head like Obi Wan Kenobi through the force, lol.

4) Having no confidence in my brakes wasn't a good feeling at all. Its hard to really give it in the straights wondering if your brakes will work when you need to slow down. Never again. I'll always have a spare set of pads OR I will make sure I have lots of pad left. I didn't know how fast pads wore and thought 4mm would be fine (as 3mm is the warning limit). Wow, was I wrong.

I would go again but I'll probably recommend to the organizer a drivers meeting beforehand to make sure people are aware of how things work. I found that very helpful at Fastlaps.

And I am SOOO looking forward to my SS brake lines. I am putting my new pads on tomorrow.

If I was you, I would not go back to a lapping event run like that. Its only a matter of time till something goes bad.

still amazes me there are track organizers that tolerate out of control, egotistical and immature driving.

totally agree with Stalker. with these guys it's always an accident if not more waiting to happen. I just don't even bother with those kind of events.

if these guys would actually learn how to drive it would be alot more fun for everyone. the guys that drive out of control beyond their limit if only they knew that kind of driving shows how little they know and how badly they drive.

Jay, having good brake pads is probably one of the most important things for a track day and my general rule of thumb is to have at least 1/2 pad left before any track day. the pad itself is also a sort of heat sink, so the more material you have the less fade there will be.

Yeah I don't wanna put anyone down or anything, I mean I think the behavior was more the exception than the rule, but I think it could've been done a little different. There was a guy there with a Carrera S and he left early, I don't know why but he just up and left, it may have been because of a problem.

Some of them definitely did NOT know how to drive and I think all they needed was an instructor to go with them like I had and show them what to do... But some of them I don't think would've taken well to an instructor and would've just not listened or thought they were the next... who races for Honda?

I wanted to say something on several occasions just to be helpful but me, having only 1 track day, didn't feel like I should be the one pointing it out. But I KNEW they were doing things wrong. For example... this guy in front of me, his lines were SO off and he was braking in turns and going way past his abilities and I said to myself you'd better stop braking into turns or you're going for a spin... sure enough he did and I mosey'd on past him... I knew he'd wipe out so I kept a good distance. I was watching his folly for 2/3 of a lap.

Yeah I am learning that :) Yes from now on at least half a pad... I didn't know about the heatsink properties of the pad... thanks, thats good to know! Lol if I had known that I probably would've anticipated losing my 4mm of pad in 4 laps and would have chosen to put my new ones on last night :)

You might want to consider upgrading to SS lines and getting some ATE or Motul brake fluid, simple but effective.

the best upgrade bang for the buck is brake pads, SS lines and high temp fluid.

SS lines already ordered :) Motul fluid sitting in my basement with Axxis Ult pads :)

That's why we like Fastlaps. Good thing that you noticed other peoples doing the wrong lines etc...

Sometimes following someone who is making mistakes can be just as educational as following a pro. You can see what does and doesn't work, what causes them to unintentionally scrub speed, spin etc...and how much room to give them. :p

Yeah it was actually.. lines make all the difference, it was very apparent how the right line can dramatically increase speed. I am sure brakes do too, and when I have them working again I am sure I'll learn even more :)

Yeah 4 car lengths is a good wide berth for the spinners :)

this is exactly why i won't go to an event unless there is a qualified organizer with good referrals. don't go back...i have seen some retarded "avoidable occurences" at these events.

good to hear you came away ok.

Thanks, yeah I think maybe I'll stick to other track days. There's lots of other ones that are available. I am going to the Touge one in Dunnville on the 11th, I was talking to the guy with the Carrera S and he said he goes to them and they are very well done.

If its like Cayuga, then its kinda boring.
Safe, but a little boaring by the end of the day.

its also a brake destroyer. LONG straights followed by 90 degree turns.

Very hard on the front tires too, especially for us BMWs.
